The New Jersey Devils returned home from their five-game road trip, and they hosted the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, November 24. With a puck drop that occurred at 7 p.m., Devils forward Cody Glass returned to the lineup. The Devils ended their losing streak by winning 4-3 against Detroit. The New Jersey Devils are now 14-7-1, and remain their best while playing at home with a record of 8-0-1.
An intense three periods of 60 minutes worth of hockey left the Prudential Center crowd in shock, full of excitement, and nervous all at the same time. It was the perfect night for some New Jersey Hockey!
All three of the following players had one goal and one assist and were notably named the Devils’ three stars of the game; these players included: Captain Nico Hischier, right wingers Timo Meier and Connor Brown.
During the first period, Hischier won the opening face-off against Detroit’s Captain Dylan Larkin. Early into the first, J.T. Compher had a big hit on Hischier, which sent him down into the boards. Hischier went down the tunnel with trainers. Not too long after Hischier left the ice, Devils forward Stefan Noesen picked up a roughing penalty, which was served by forward Paul Cotter, along with a fighting penalty against J.T. Compher. Hischer returned later in the first period and played the rest of the game. Only four minutes into the first period, a lot of action was faced between the players. At 12:54, Meier was first to score, giving the Devils the 1-0 lead. His goal was assisted by Noesen and Hischier.
Shortly after, Detroit found the back of the Devils’ net to tie the game 1-1. A backhanded goal scored by Alex DeBrincat that was assisted by Patrick Kane and Moritz Seider. DeBrincat gave the Devils plenty of trouble on Monday night. Not long after, Hischier came back in to give the Devils a 2-1 advantage over Detroit. His snap shot goal led the team into battle with minutes remaining, forward Jesper Bratt and Meier picked up the assists.
With a minute and four seconds remaining, Glass gave it his all with a tip-in goal to put the Devils up 3-1 by the end of the first, defenseman Luke Hughes and Brown picked up the assists; an incredible first period for the Devils.
Heading into the second period, Detroit began to make a comeback. At 1:30, James van Riemsdyk scored a backhand on goaltender Jacob Markstrom. With assists by Andrew Copp and Emmitt Finnie, the Devils remained in the lead by 3-2. To finish off the second period, with over eight minutes to go, Brown picked up his sixth goal of the season (8:38), a sleek wrist shot with the help of right winger Dawson Mercer. Another fantastic period for the Devils as they found their footing and kept the consistency flowing throughout the 40 minutes heading into the final 20, leading 4-2.
As the third period commenced, this was the final push to win. The Devils were already up 4-2 and had to keep that momentum. At 10:12, Detroit scored their final goal of the evening. Dylan Larkin scored with a wrist shot goal that was assisted by Lucas Raymond and Seider. The third period was quite intense; however, the New Jersey Devils had not sought to score any more goals that evening.
The team won 4-3, but both teams began to brawl as the evening started to conclude. It has been a rough last few games for the team, so it was vital to give nothing but their best since returning from the road. The team looked to find their standing and pushed to the end to win it all—an incredible game here in New Jersey.
The New Jersey Devils will next play the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday, November 26 at 7 p.m. at the Prudential Center. Stay tuned for more updates!
