NJSIAA Reschedules Multiple State Championships Due to Forecasted Blizzard

By Christopher Shannon

The NJSIAA has postponed Sunday’s swimming and Groups 1 and 4 indoor track and field state championships and adjusted the schedule for the wrestling team championships due to a State of Emergency that has been declared in New Jersey in anticipation of a forecasted snow storm Sunday through Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for 17 counties in New Jersey with some areas of the Garden State forecasted to receive up to 20 inches of snow along with wind gusts up to 45 mph.

Due to Sunday’s forecast, and State of Emergency, the NJSIAA has postponed Sunday’s swimming state championships to Tuesday and Thursday.  Groups B and C will compete Tuesday evening with Group B kicking off action at 5:00 p.m. at Rutgers, while Group A and the non-publics will compete on Thursday with Group A action commencing at 1:30 p.m. at the Neptune Aquatic Center.

Sunday’s Group 1 and 4 indoor track and field championships have also been postponed.  Those championships will now take place on Friday with action getting underway at 4:30 p.m. at the John Bennett Indoor Complex in Toms River.

The wrestling team championships scheduled for Sunday are still scheduled to take place tomorrow,  however, times have been adjusted to earlier in the morning.  Session 1, which includes Groups 1 and 5, Non-Public B, and girls, will now start at 10:00 a.m. and session 2, which includes Groups 2, 3, 4, and Non-Public A will commence at 12:30 p.m.

UPDATE: The swimming state finals date, time, and location has been changed.  As of Feb. 23, all finals will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Neptune Aquatics Center beginning with Group A at 8:30 a.m.
