BlueClaws Fall to IronBirds, Snapping Five-Game Win Streak

By Ryan Damico

LAKEWOOD – Aberdeen’s strong pitching from Sebastian Gongora proved to be way too much for the BlueClaws as he threw five great innings to take the win 4-1, over this past Thursday night game at ShoreTown Ballpark, breaking Jersey Shore’s five-game win streak.

This loss for the BlueClaws not only ends their win streak but also gives Aberdeen eight wins in their 15 matchups they’ve had this year.

Thanks to Gongora’s dominance on the mound, striking out five and walking two, Aberdeen took the lead early in the second inning with Cole Urman hitting an RBI triple to right centerfield. Running in Angel Tejada, who was walked. They added another in the third on a double from Vance Honeycutt to raise the pressure even more for the BlueClaws to do something.

On the opposite side, the Jersey Shore starter, Reese Dutton, gave up two runs in five innings, allowing Drew Garrett to step in during the sixth inning. Garrett got the IronBirds with two outs but allowed a two-run double to Aron Estrada to push their lead to 4-0, creating a huge blow to the team’s hope.

The score stayed until the bottom of the eighth when the BlueClaws loaded the bases.  However, Jersey Shore only managed one run on a groundout from Pierce Bennett. The BlueClaws’ late push ended up being too little, too late.  Jersey Shore will look to come out hot and bounce back in the rest of this weekend’s series.

Not only did Gongora gave up one hit over his five innings, he also earned his first professional victory in dominant fashion.

The BlueClaws and IronBirds continue their series tonight and through the weekend.
