Brooklyn Nets Start Off NBA Season in Nightmare Fashion, Lose Four in a Row

By Jamie Rafael Mocling-Pan

The Brooklyn Nets’ 2026-2027 NBA season is off to a rough start. The Nets have lost their first four games and are now 0-4, tied for last in the Eastern Conference with the Miami Heat. Brooklyn has let a few wins slip away, including their most recent loss to the Boston Celtics, where a Jayson Tatum mid-range jumper won it in overtime.

The loss stripped Brooklyn of their first win of the season at the very last second. The Nets are still rebuilding, but the start of a bright future is starting to look dim, and it will get darker if they don’t grab some wins soon.

Brooklyn Goes Stylish On Opening Night

The Brooklyn Nets rocked their new jerseys, paying homage to their ABA days, for their 60th season. The novelty of the new threads wore off quickly as the Nets failed to grab a win on opening night, falling 110-103 to the Charlotte Hornets. Naz Reid’s 20-point double-double, including 11 rebounds, and Grayson Allen’s 21 points off the bench led the Hornets to the win.

Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. carried the Nets offense with 33 and 26 points, respectively. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t enough, as the rest of the Nets couldn’t reach double digits.

The Nets had a chance to win after cutting a 10-point fourth-quarter lead. With five minutes remaining, Brooklyn cut the lead, and a Randle three-pointer made it a single-possession game. However, a Demin turnover set up an Allen three-pointer that sealed the win for Charlotte with about a minute left.

It was an uneventful night for the number six pick in the 2026 draft, as Mikel Brown Jr. finished his rookie debut with just six points and three assists.

Brooklyn Suffers Another Loss

Another win slipped away from Brooklyn in a 125 to 121 win for the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. Donovan Mitchell (22), Jarrett Allen (21), and Evan Mobley (20) led the charge for Cleveland.

Cleveland shot better from the field at about 50.6% compared to Brooklyn’s 40.2% and got more free-throw attempts. The Cavaliers made 29 of 38 from the foul line, while Brooklyn made 23 of 27 but had fewer opportunities.

On the Brooklyn side, Porter Jr. scored 28, Randle 23, and Egor Demin 22. Demin was solid offensively on the perimeter, hitting three three-pointers to chip away at Cleveland’s lead in the fourth quarter.

Demin drove much of the Nets’ offensive surge, as Brooklyn went on a 22-to-7 run in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to two with 8 seconds remaining. Sam Merrill made a pair of free throws in the final seconds to shut down any last-second comeback for Brooklyn and seal the loss. Brooklyn’s offensive run was valiant, but they couldn’t finish in the final seconds, adding another loss to the season.

Indiana Pacers Tear Into Brooklyn And Extend Losing Streak To Three Games

The Brooklyn Nets got blitzed by the Indiana Pacers in a 136 to 109 loss led by a returning Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton had a double-double with 24 points and 10 assists, while Pascal Siakam added 21 points and Obi Toppin added 16 off the bench.

For Brooklyn, the bench led the way offensively: Nolan Traore with 17 points, Josh Minott with 15, and Moritz Wagner with 13.

The Nets were shot out of the game, shooting only 41% from the field and 33% from the three-point line compared to Indiana’s 58% from the field and 49% from the three-point line.

While the first quarter was close, with Brooklyn trailing by only two points, the Pacers found a rhythm and never looked back. The Pacers outscored the Nets 41-30 in the second quarter and 37-24 in the third, putting the game well out of reach for Brooklyn.

The Nets had no chance against a well-paced Pacers offense, and even Jordi Fernandez’s defensive style couldn’t stop Indiana’s onslaught.

Jayson Tatum Clutches in Overtime Win Against Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets nearly stole a win against the Boston Celtics in a back-and-forth matchup that ended heartbreakingly for the Nets on a Jayson Tatum buzzer-beater.

It was a buzzer-beater shot from a mid-range jumper by Tatum in overtime that caused the 125 to 124 loss for Brooklyn. Tatum had a dominant night with 40 points, with Paul George behind with 21 and Derrick White with 16.

For Brooklyn, Porter Jr. had a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Randle scored 24.

Late in the game, Mitchell Robinson missed a pair of free throws, giving Brooklyn a chance to tie. Rookie Brown Jr. created the opportunity and hit a game-tying three-pointer to send it to overtime.

Unfortunately, the rookie could not create a game-winning opportunity in overtime, missing a free throw with two seconds remaining. Brown Jr.’s miss set up a mid-range game-winner for Tatum as the Nets went down and lost their fourth straight.

What’s Next For The Nets

The Nets looked to have improved since last season, and adding Julius Randle has significantly boosted Brooklyn. However, the Nets have failed to capitalize on game-winning opportunities, as most of their losses have been close. The Nets have shown they can go toe-to-toe with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics, but they lack the team experience to win close games.

The Nets have a strong offense but are weak defensively. An offense led by two vets can only take a team like the Nets so far, and they haven’t been faring well. A team with this level of offense can win, but it must distribute the ball more evenly rather than relying solely on Randle and Porter Jr.

The Nets also need to create stops and build a tight lead rather than playing catch-up for most of the game. The Nets can only go up from here, and hopefully they can clean up defensively to get some much-needed wins before the season collapses on them.
