The notion of A.J. Brown leaving the Philadelphia Eagles has felt more like an offseason drama than a real possibility for the past several months. But, with June 1 fast approaching, the rumors aren’t fading; they’re growing louder.
Multiple NFL insiders and reports now say Philadelphia is at least open to moving Brown in a post-June 1 trade, with the New England Patriots remaining the most likely landing spot.
And, to be honest, when you look at everything that has transpired over the past year, the sideline frustration, the cryptic comments, tension around the offense, and now wedding headlines involving Jalen Hurts, it makes it easier to understand why people think this situation may already be heading toward a breakup.
Why June 1 Matters So Much
The biggest reason this trade has not happened yet is money.
The Eagles would reportedly absorb more than $43 million in dead cap if they trade Brown before June 1. But after June 1, that number drops like a rock and can be spread out over multiple seasons, making a move financially realistic. Hence, the continued refrain from league insiders that if Brown is traded, the real window opens after June 1.
Reports from NBC Sports Philadelphia and CBS Sports both stated that Philadelphia remains open to a trade and that conversations are expected to heat back up once the financial restrictions loosen.
The Patriots make the most sense for several reasons:
- Former Titans coach Mike Vrabel is now in New England.
- Brown had some of his best years playing under Vrabel in Tennessee.
- New England desperately needs a true WR1.
- Reports say the Patriots are willing to part with premium draft compensation.
The Los Angeles Rams have also been connected to Brown, but recent reports indicate New England is viewed as the favorite.
Brown’s Frustration Was Visible All Season
This is not just a random trade speculation out of the blue. Brown’s actions throughout the 2025 season kept raising questions about his happiness in Philadelphia.
There were multiple instances where the cameras caught him visibly frustrated on the sideline with Hurts and the offense. There were reports throughout the year of growing frustration over his role, his targets, and the structure of the Eagles’ offense.
Brown also posted cryptic messages online at times when Philadelphia leaned heavily on the run game, and he wasn’t getting the ball consistently.
At one point, the Eagles were on a losing streak, and Brown’s stats happened to be better during that period of time than when they were winning. While being interviewed after these losses, Brown seemed happier, and his tone was better during these interviews than when the team was actually winning games, and his stats happened to be lower.
This confused fans and media reports.
Do you care about winning, or only care bout stats?
Fox News even pointed out at one point that Brown called the offense a “s— show” on a livestream and joked to the camera about his usage during Madden streams.
Brown still accumulated over 1,000 receiving yards, but there was a feeling behind the scenes that things were not quite right.
To be fair, ESPN reports said team sources never saw Hurts and Brown blow up into major arguments during the season, and both remained professional.
But professional doesn’t mean perfect.
Body language, the sideline exchanges, the constant rumors, it was all obvious that folks around the league were watching.
The Wedding Situation Added More Fuel
Brown married longtime partner, Kelsey Riley, last week in a big beachside wedding in California. But what stood out immediately around the NFL was who was not there.
Hurts, Brown’s quarterback, longtime friend, and even godfather of Brown’s daughter, reportedly was not there. TMZ also reported that no current Eagles players appeared to be in attendance.
This immediately led to another round of speculation. But nobody really knows why now. Maybe it was scheduling conflicts. It might have been private. It might mean nothing at all.
But looks count in today’s NFL. And when your franchise quarterback misses the wedding of one of his best teammates during an offseason filled with trade rumors, people are going to talk, especially when Brown and Hurts were once viewed as inseparable.
Hurts reportedly advocated for Philadelphia to acquire Brown from Tennessee to begin with, and the two helped lead the Eagles to some of the best offensive years in franchise history.
The absence was therefore so striking.
Could Philadelphia Actually Pull the Trigger?
The hard part for Eagles fans is this: moving Brown would absolutely hurt the offense despite having a good draft pickup.
The trade rumors became more serious after Philadelphia picked up former USC wide receiver Makai Lemon in the first round.
The media has been showing Lemon hanging out with the other Eagles’ star receiver, one of Brown’s close friends, Devonta Smith.
Brown is still one of the NFL’s elite receivers. Since arriving in Philadelphia, he transformed the Eagles’ passing attack and became Hurts’ most dangerous weapon.
But the Eagles also have to think long-term.
Philadelphia has major contracts across the roster, young stars needing extensions, and a general manager who has never been afraid to make shocking business decisions if they believe it benefits the future.
If the relationship between Brown and the organization has cooled even slightly, and if the Patriots truly offer a first-round pick package, the Eagles may decide now is the time to move him while his value remains sky high.
At this point, nothing is official.
But the rumors are no longer just internet gossip. National insiders, salary cap realities, Brown’s visible frustration, and the nonstop Patriots connections have created a situation where a post-June 1 blockbuster suddenly feels very possible.
