The Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Detroit Lions for Sunday Night Football. The Lions last played against the Commanders on the road and won 44-22, while the Eagles were at home for their last game and took down the Packers 10-7. The defense was key in the win against the Packers last week for the Eagles and it would continue this game.
After the Eagles’ first drive of the game, Detroit had possession as Jared Goff threw an interception that was picked off by Cooper Dejean, who ran it for 21 yards before being taken down. The Eagles would get on the board first as Jake Elliott made a field goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Both teams would punt at the end of the first quarter. The Lions failed to convert on back to back fourth down conversions early in the second quarter. Then, Elliott knocked down another field goal as the Eagles took a 6-0 lead.
On 2nd-and-10 Jared Goff threw a 34-yard pass to Amon-Ra St.Brown to get into Philly territory. Goff would find Jameson Williams for the touchdown along with a 15-yard penalty due to unsportsmanlike conduct. Jake Bates missed the extra point and it would be a time game at six apiece.
Jalen Hurts led a surgical drive down field but it almost came crashing down as he was able to recover the ball after fumbling. Saquon Barkley ran for a four-yard touchdown but the call was reversed. It was Jalen Hurts’ turn as he ran up the middle for the touchdown to put the Eagles in front. Jake Elliot made the field goal and that was halftime. The Eagles were up 13-6.
In the third quarter, defense would dominate. The Eagles forced three straight turnovers on downs in the 3rd quarter. A key play in the 3rd quarter Goff threw a short pass to Jahmyr Gibbs for 42 yards and yet the Eagles got the goal line stop. It would be a scoreless third quarter as the Eagles still led 13-6. The Eagles started off the 4th quarter with a 49 yard field goal made by Jake Elliot to have a 16-6 lead.
The Lions would punt on their next two drives and the Eagles punted away as well and suffered a turnover on downs. Detroit had possession again as they had to settle for a 54-yard field goal by Jake Bates. Barkley would run eight yards for the first down to seal the deal in Philadelphia. The Eagles won 16-9.
The Eagles’ defense in this game was sensational as they stopped the Lions from converting on fourth down five times. Cooper Dejean had an interception, Jaelan Philips and Nakobe Dean both recorded a sack. The Lions are now 6-4 on the year and they next play the New York Giants at home. The Eagles stay atop the NFC as they next play their division rival, the Dallas Cowboys on the road.
