The Philadelphia Eagles traveled to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers for Monday Night Football. The Eagles came into the game after their bye week, where they made a myriad of trades to bolster their defense. Since 2016, Howie Roseman and the Eagles have made 98 trades, which is the second most in that time period. The Packers came into MNF following a home loss to the Panthers. These two teams faced each other twice last year, and one of those matchups came in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs when the Eagles took them down.
If you were expecting a high-scoring thriller, you would have been entirely wrong as the Eagles held on for a 10-7 road win in Green Bay.
In the first quarter, Green Bay’s first drive, led by Jordan Love, ended in a punt. The Eagles got possession next as Saquon Barkley had a big run for 15 yards and gave the Eagles a first down. On third-and-10, Hurts threw an 11-yard pass to Will Shipley to midfield, but later, a key mistake happened at third-and-8 with the first quarter winding down.
Hurts scrambled but fumbled and Keisean Dixon of the Packers recovered it. The Packers had a quick three-and-out and it almost ended sooner when Love recovered his own fumble. At the end of the first quarter, it was scoreless, as both teams punted on their next three possessions in the second quarter. Late in the quarter, the Packers had possession as Love was sacked by Nolan Smith Jr. Love tried to throw on second-and-10, but Nakobe Dean sacked him, resulting in a fumble recovered by Jaelan Phillips. Going into halftime, the game remained scoreless —the first time this had happened all season.
In the third quarter, the Eagles would start first as Hurts threw the longest passing yard play at this point to Dallas Goedert for a gain of 22 yards. On 4th-and-8 in Green Bay territory, the Eagles elected for a field goal as Jake Elliot nailed it from 39 yards to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. The Packers would have a turnover on downs and the Eagles would have a quick three-and-out to close out the 3rd quarter.
In the fourth quarter, after the Packers punted, Hurts threw a short pass to Saquon for a 41-yard gain, putting them in Packers territory. Hurts would then find Devonta Smith for a 36-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead. The Packers would respond next as they went right down the field, as Josh Jacobs ran in for the touchdown to make it 10-7 in favor of Philadelphia. The Eagles would punt after a nine-play drive. On the ensuing drive, Love completed a 25-yard strike to Christian Watson on a third-and-10. Later in the drive, on fourth-and-1, Jacobs ran into Philips and Reed Blankenship, who were there to force a fumble that Blankenship picked up.
The Eagles looked to close it out, but there was questionable play calling as Hurts tried to find A.J. Brown, but was covered by Valentine. The Packers would get one last chance as Jordan Love threw a pass to former Rutgers wide receiver Bo Melton for an 18-yard gain. Brandon McManus would try to make a career-long field goal for 64 yards to send it into overtime, but missed it. The Eagles would hold on to win 10-7.
Both teams would struggle offensively in this game. The defense was key for the Eagles as those trades certainly paid off. The Packers next play the Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles next play the Lions at home for Sunday Night Football.
