Can Jaxson Dart save the Giants franchise?
Jaxson Dart officially makes his starting quarterback debut for the New York Giants on Sunday, and with it comes the weight of the franchise on his shoulders. He says he doesn’t feel pressure but he’s about to face an undefeated, much-improved Los Angeles Chargers squad.
The Chargers boast a top-10 defense, while the Giants sit near the bottom in almost every defensive category. Offensively, it’s no better: the Chargers lead the NFL in red-zone efficiency and rank #3 on third downs. The Giants? They come in at #31.(per Fox Sports)And if you want a quick metric for winning football, it’s third-down conversions. That’s where playcalling, execution, and scoring chances all converge.
Translation: the Giants are in for a very long day.
Yes, Dart has more mobility and pocket presence than Russell Wilson, but he’s still a rookie who hasn’t thrown a regular-season pass. And he’s working with the same playcaller (Mike Kafka) and same head coach (Brian Daboll) who has shown over the last four years that he can’t get his team motivated and ready to play on a consistent basis.
You can bet Chargers DC Jesse Minter will copy Steve Spagnuolo’s blueprint from Week 3: erase Malik Nabers, force Dart to adjust, and dare the Giants to beat them another way. With film now out on rookie RB Cam Skattebo, Los Angeles will be ready for him too.
West coast teams traveling east for early games usually stumble, but the Chargers won’t. Dart may show flashes, but the Giants simply don’t have enough to match L.A.’s balance on both sides of the ball. The Chargers stay undefeated while everyone wonders what went wrong in New York. Again.
