LANDOVER, Md. — Despite rallying from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit, the New York Football Giants and Washington Commanders tied in overtime on Sunday after multiple blunders in extra time.
Quarterback Jameis Winston led the Giants’ comeback, throwing three touchdown passes, including a late pass to Malik Nabers that tied the game at 27-27 with 1:43 remaining in regulation.
Washington took control early, building a 12-3 halftime lead behind its rushing attack. Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt opened the scoring with a 33-yard touchdown run, while the Giants struggled to find consistency on offense.
Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, returning from an elbow injury suffered against the Cowboys in Week 2, scored two rushing touchdowns against Big Blue. Daniels broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run before adding another score to give Washington a 25-13 lead in the fourth quarter.
However, this was not the end for New York.
Winston found tight end Isaiah Likely for his second touchdown of the game before connecting with Nabers for a 17 yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The score tied the game and forced overtime.
Nabers finished with 11 receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Likely recorded 11 catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Winston completed 33 of 54 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns.
Both teams had opportunities to win in overtime. The Giants drove into Washington territory and into field goal range but lost possession after a costly fumble by Cam Skattebo. The Commanders subsequently moved into field goal range, but a head scratching decision by Daniels to run with little time remaining prevented Washington from getting another play off before the clock expired.
The tie leaves both teams with a frustrating result after a game in which each had opportunities to secure the victory. The Giants showed progress offensively, and J.J. McCarthy even had a few opportunities to acclimate himself to the offense.
The Giants’ next game will take place Sunday at MetLife Stadium against the New Orleans Saints. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
