FOXBOROUGH, MA — Gotham FC opened its 2026 title defense with a 1-0 win over expansion side Boston Legacy FC on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
The defending NWSL champions spoiled Boston’s first league match and earned three points in the first meeting between the clubs.
Boston, however, made Gotham work for it. The expansion side applied an aggressive press throughout the opening half, limiting space in midfield and preventing the defending champions from creating sustained attacking pressure.
“Boston had a really aggressive press, so figuring out how to break that down and get around it was difficult,” defender Lilly Reale said. “But once we were able to get out to the other side, that’s when I felt I was able to go forward and attack and provide some crosses for runners to finish. I’m really proud of our team. It just took a little longer today to open things up.”
Clear chances were limited before halftime. Gotham’s first notable opportunity came in the 15th minute when Savannah McCaskill delivered a cross toward the back post for Jaedyn Shaw, whose attempt failed to connect cleanly. Later in the half, Rose Lavelle swung a free kick into the penalty area that fell to Sarah Schupansky at the top of the box, but her shot drifted wide as the teams went into the break scoreless.
The match shifted shortly after halftime when Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós turned to his bench, bringing on striker Esther González and rookie forward Jordynn Dudley, with Dudley making her Gotham and professional debut.
The decision quickly paid off.
In the 55th minute, Reale stepped in to intercept a pass near midfield before Shaw pushed the attack forward and played Reale down the flank. Reale’s cross into the penalty area was not fully cleared by Boston, and González reacted first, finishing the loose ball into the far corner for the only goal of the match.
Boston’s push for an equalizer became more difficult in the 76th minute when defender Bianca St-Georges received a second yellow card following a challenge on Dudley. The physical contest kept the referee busy throughout the afternoon, with nine yellow cards issued in addition to the red card.
Boston pressed forward late and 10 minutes of stoppage time were added, but Gotham remained organized defensively to secure the clean sheet.
“I would really like to congratulate Boston Legacy and the city, and everyone involved behind the scenes, for making sure this was possible,” Amorós said. “The game, the experience, the future is bright for them. The stadium was amazing.”
Gotham FC will host the North Carolina Courage next Saturday in its 2026 home opener at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m., followed by a ring ceremony honoring the club’s 2025 NWSL championship.
