Gotham FC will face the Washington Spirit on Saturday at Audi Field with the NWSL Shield within reach. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET.
Gotham enters the matchup at (16-4-7) with 55 points, holding a four-point lead over second-place San Diego Wave. The reigning NWSL champions have put themselves in position to finish atop the league standings for the first time in club history, but they will need to navigate a difficult matchup against a familiar opponent to take another step toward that goal.
A victory over Washington would guarantee the Bats a top two finish and home-field advantage through the NWSL playoff semifinals. The club could also clinch the Shield on Saturday with a win and a San Diego loss to the North Carolina Courage, putting additional importance on a weekend in which the standings could be decided.
Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós acknowledged the significance of the opportunity but emphasized that Gotham cannot lose sight of the preparation required to earn the result.
“The whole year you work to try to get to a place like the one we’re going to be in tomorrow, where we know we’re top of the league and there is a lot that we can win,” Amorós said. “But for us, it’s always about our processes, about how we prepare the game, how we try to install our style of play.”
Gotham will enter the match looking to respond after settling for a 1-1 draw against Angel City FC on Oct. 4. Jaedyn Shaw gave Gotham the lead in the 66th minute following a combination involving Midge Purce and Rose Lavelle, but Angel City found an equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time.
The late goal prevented Gotham from adding three points to its total, although the club remains in control of the Shield race heading into the final three matches. Saturday presents another opportunity to turn that position into a title, with Gotham needing to maintain its level against a Washington side that has its own postseason ambitions.
The Spirit sit third in the standings at (15-4-8) with 49 points. They enter the weekend following a 3-2 victory over the Houston Dash and will look to build on that result as they pursue a higher playoff position. With Washington trailing Gotham by six points, the matchup also offers the Spirit an opportunity to make up ground against the league leaders.
Amorós expects a competitive atmosphere against an opponent Gotham knows well. The two clubs have met repeatedly across league play and postseason competitions in recent years, making Saturday’s contest another chapter in a familiar rivalry.
“It’s probably the team that we’ve played the most in the last few years, but it’s always beautiful,” Amorós said. “It’s a great game. It’s a great atmosphere and environment to come in and play.”
Gotham will also have to manage its remaining matches without several players who have suffered season-ending injuries. Defender Bruninha will miss the remainder of the campaign after tearing her ACL while representing Brazil, while forward Jordynn Dudley is also out for the season. Emily Sonnett and Kayla Duran are among the other players the club has been without for an extended period.
Despite the setbacks, Amorós said the team is focused on preparing the available players to contribute as Gotham continues its pursuit of silverware.
“We don’t look for excuses or problems. We look for solutions, and that’s why we make sure that every player is ready to do the job,” Amorós said.
The Spaniard also stressed that the injured players remain part of the team’s pursuit of its goals, with the squad determined to keep them involved in the achievement should Gotham secure a title.
The matchup marks the second meeting between Gotham and Washington this season. Gotham claimed a 1-0 victory in the Queens Classic at Citi Field on July 15, with Lavelle scoring the winner in front of 42,175 fans, a record crowd for a women’s sporting event in New York City.
Saturday’s rematch presents Gotham with another chance to get past the Spirit and move closer to a historic regular-season finish. With the Shield within reach and the postseason approaching, Gotham will look to leave Audi Field with a result that brings them one step closer to finishing atop the NWSL standings.
