Gotham FC welcomes the Kansas City Current to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Friday night in a matchup that could offer a glimpse of a potential NWSL playoff meeting.
Gotham enters the contest riding a seven-match unbeaten streak and a three-match winning streak. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.
The Bats (12-3-4) remain atop the NWSL standings after a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Wave last Friday. Jaedyn Shaw’s first-half strike proved to be the difference as Gotham’s defense once again held firm to secure its third consecutive victory.
The win was Gotham’s sixth in its last seven matches, with the lone non-winning result coming in a draw. The Bats have also gone 307 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal and have recorded a league-leading 12 clean sheets through 19 regular-season matches.
Now, Gotham faces a Kansas City side looking to climb back into the playoff picture.
The Current (9-7-3) sit seventh in the standings and enter Friday’s match following a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dash. Kansas City has experienced an inconsistent stretch in recent weeks, but Gotham’s acting head coach Shaun Harris expects a difficult challenge from a team with a clear identity.
“They always pose certain threats, and it’s always a difficult, challenging, high-intensity game,” Harris said. “We relish those opportunities to come up against those teams.”
Gotham has already faced Kansas City twice this season, splitting the first two meetings. The Current earned a 2-1 victory when the teams met in April. Shaw scored Gotham’s lone goal in that match.
Gotham got its revenge in June, defeating Kansas City 2-0 in the NWSL Challenge Cup behind goals from former forward Esther González and rookie Jordynn Dudley.
While the Bats will look to build on their recent run of form, Harris knows Kansas City can cause problems if Gotham allows the Current to dictate the match.
“They’re a team that has a strong identity in the way they play,” Harris said. “If you let them do that, they do it very well.”
Harris emphasized the importance of limiting Kansas City’s transition opportunities while making smart decisions after winning possession.
“It’s about being on the front foot, being aggressive and making sure that we take the game to them,” Harris said.
Gotham will also look to maintain its defensive form at home. The Bats have been among the league’s most difficult teams to break down all season, and another clean sheet would extend an impressive stretch heading into the latter portion of the regular season.
For Kansas City, Friday presents an opportunity to pick up valuable points against the league leaders and strengthen its position in the playoff race.
For Gotham, it is another chance to continue building momentum at the top of the table. With both teams having already faced each other twice this season, Friday’s meeting could provide another early look at what a postseason matchup between the two sides might look like.
