First-place Gotham FC returns home Friday for a marquee matchup against the Portland Thorns FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium, with an opportunity to establish a new club record for the longest unbeaten streak in NWSL regular-season play. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET
Gotham FC (13-3-5) enters the matchup atop the NWSL standings with 44 points after playing Angel City FC to a scoreless draw Sunday. A result against Portland would extend Gotham’s unbeaten run to 10 matches and give the club sole possession of its longest regular-season unbeaten streak.
The Bats have built their run through a combination of defensive consistency and their ability to find results in tight matches, but Friday’s matchup presents another test against one of the league’s top teams.
Portland (11-6-4) sits third with 37 points, level with second-place Washington Spirit but behind the Spirit on goal difference. The Thorns arrive riding a three-match winning streak after defeating Denver Summit FC 1-0 on Saturday.
Sophia Wilson provided the difference against Denver, scoring her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Her presence gives Portland another dangerous attacking option for a Gotham defense that will have to manage the Thorns’ ability to create chances in transition.
The two teams are meeting for the second time this season after playing to a 2-2 draw in July. Midge Purce and Sam Kerr scored for Gotham in that matchup, but Portland exposed areas of the Bats’ defense that acting head coach Shaun Harris wants his team to address Friday.
“Looking back at the last time we played them, we looked at certain areas where we felt we can improve, and hopefully we can put the result right and get the three points,” Harris said. “But ultimately we’re focusing on the performance and being an improvement from last time.”
Gotham Looks to Limit Portland in Transition
The biggest concern from the previous meeting was Portland’s ability to attack during transitions.
Harris pointed to Gotham’s struggles when possession turned over, particularly during the first half of the July meeting. Emily Sonnett’s injury during that match also affected Gotham’s defensive organization, but Harris believes the team can avoid a repeat performance by being more deliberate with its possession and positioning.
“Probably the main cause of threat, what was causing us a lot of problems, was the transition piece,” Harris said.
Gotham will look to establish control early rather than allowing Portland opportunities to attack in space. Harris emphasized the importance of maintaining good positions, circulating possession and limiting turnovers in dangerous areas.
The Bats will also need to be more precise with their passing.
“There was a couple in our last game as well, just unforced turnovers,” Harris said. “It’s about the concentration and making sure we’re doing due diligence in where we’re playing the balls and what kind of passes we’re playing into what areas.”
That approach could be particularly important against a Portland side that enters the match with confidence after winning its last three games.
Harris also identified an early goal as a potential way for Gotham to settle the match and prevent Portland from gaining momentum.
“Ultimately, if we can go get the goals early, then that kind of settles the game down,” Harris said.
Rose Lavelle Out, Denise O’Sullivan Available
Gotham will be without midfielder Rose Lavelle on Friday after she entered concussion protocol following Sunday’s match against Angel City.
Lavelle suffered a concussion after hitting the back of her head on the turf and was forced to exit the match early. Gotham’s training staff attended to her on the field before she walked off under her own power.
Harris confirmed during Thursday’s pre match press conference that Lavelle remains unavailable while she goes through the necessary testing with the medical team.
Her absence removes an important piece from Gotham’s midfield ahead of a matchup in which the Bats will be looking to control possession and dictate the tempo.
There is positive news elsewhere in the midfield, however, as Denise O’Sullivan is available for selection after returning to training with the team.
“She’s back in training with the team and now she’s available for selection,” Harris said.
Whether O’Sullivan sees the field will depend on how the match develops, but her return gives Gotham another option as it prepares for a physical matchup against Portland.
Another Test at Home
Friday’s match gives Gotham another opportunity to continue its record-setting stretch in front of its home supporters.
The Bats have already established themselves as the league’s top team through 21 matches, but Portland arrives with its own momentum and plenty at stake in the standings. With the Thorns only seven points behind Gotham, the matchup could have significant implications as the regular season enters its final stretch.
For Gotham, however, the immediate objective is straightforward: continue the unbeaten run while correcting the problems that contributed to July’s 2-2 draw.
“It’s another opportunity at home, which we’re really excited about,” Harris said. “Get behind the fans and hopefully put on a good show.”
A victory would accomplish both of those goals while giving Gotham sole possession of the club record for the longest unbeaten run in NWSL regular season play.
