Gotham FC announced Tuesday that midfielder Nealy Martin has been traded to Angel City FC in exchange for $85,000 in transfer funds. The move comes at Martin’s request as she begins a new chapter in Los Angeles.
Martin, 27, leaves Gotham after nearly three seasons with the Bats, where she became a fan favorite and played a central role in the club’s historic success. A steady presence in midfield, she helped Gotham capture the 2023 NWSL Championship and the 2025 Concacaf W Champions Cup, logging 73 total appearances across all competitions.
This season, Martin featured in 16 matches (12 starts), adding an assist against Bay FC and contributing in both the Concacaf W Champions Cup semifinal and final. Her versatility and commitment made her a reliable option for Gotham, whether in the starting XI or off the bench.
Martin’s most unforgettable moment in Gotham colors came in the 2023 championship final. After goalkeeper Mandy Haught was sent off late, Martin stepped into goal—becoming the first outfield player in NWSL history to do so during a playoff game. Her courage in that moment helped Gotham hold on and secure its first league title.
Reflecting on her departure, Martin shared her appreciation for the club and its supporters:
“More than anything, I want to thank the Gotham community for taking a chance and believing in me during my time here. I gave my heart and soul to this club, and a piece of me will always remain in NJ/NY. It would’ve taken something very special for me to consider leaving this place, and I have found that in Angel City. As I leave, excited for this new chapter with LA, my heart is so full of gratitude for every moment here.”
Gotham’s general manager and head of soccer operations, Yael Averbuch West, praised Martin’s impact both on and off the field:

Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Martin began her NWSL career with Racing Louisville after earning a contract through open tryouts in 2021. She joined Gotham ahead of the 2023 season and went on to surpass her 50th NWSL regular-season appearance earlier this year.
For Gotham, the trade closes the book on one of the most memorable player stories in club history—one built on resilience, professionalism, and championship glory.
