Gotham finding value in rookie midfielder down the stretch

By David Macaulay-Smith

Josefine Hasbo’s arrival in Gotham FC’s midfield comes at a vital moment. The Danish rookie’s tactical adaptability and youthful energy give head coach Juan Carlos Amorós another option as the club navigates a congested late-season push toward the playoffs.

Hasbo signed a multi-year contract on June 10 after a standout career at Harvard, where she totaled 25 goals and 17 assists in 55 appearances. Just 11 days later, she made her Gotham debut as a second-half substitute against Bay FC.

By August 20, she had secured her first professional start in a 2-1 victory over CF Monterrey in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, where she played a key role in Bruninha’s opening goal. Nine days later, she was in the starting XI against the Orlando Pride, lining up alongside Rose Lavelle and Jaelin Howell.

Her fit in Gotham’s lineup centers on balance and flexibility. Paired with Lavelle, Hasbo tends to drop deeper, recycling possession and creating space for Lavelle’s forward runs. With Howell, her role shifts higher, pressing and driving transitions while Howell protects the back line. In a three-player midfield, she becomes the connector, bridging defensive structure with attacking rhythm and covering ground on both sides of the ball.

That versatility is especially valuable as Gotham manages heavy minutes for its veteran midfielders. Hasbo provides a fresh and tactically adaptable option, allowing Amorós to rotate the squad without losing intensity in pressing or control in possession. Her ability to adjust on the fly gives Gotham another layer of flexibility heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Her international résumé further strengthens her role. Since debuting for Denmark in 2020, Hasbo has earned more than 30 caps, including appearances at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. That experience has refined her timing, composure, and sense of tempo; qualities crucial in the high-pressure environment of the NWSL’s stretch run.

Hasbo’s contributions may not always show up in the box score. Still, they surface in decisive moments: intercepting passes, making clean outlet decisions under pressure, or adding energy to Gotham’s press late in games. As the postseason race tightens, her presence offers more than depth; it provides Gotham with a role-specific, tactically versatile midfielder capable of shaping results in subtle yet meaningful ways.
