BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Gotham FC looked set to claim a crucial road victory Friday night, taking an early lead before a late surge from the Chicago Stars earned a dramatic 1-1 draw at SeatGeek Stadium.
The match began with an early setback for Gotham when winger Midge Purce was forced off injured in the 13th minute. Bruninha came on to fill the gap, tasked with maintaining the team’s attacking momentum.
Gotham found their rhythm midway through the first half, building pressure with crisp passing and strong movement. That effort paid off in the 39th minute. Rookie Khyah Harper, making her first professional start, rose to the occasion with her first career goal. Sarah Schupansky, who continues to grow into one of Gotham’s most crucial playmakers, delivered her fifth assist of the season with a perfectly weighted cross from the left flank. Harper timed her jump flawlessly and powered a header past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher for a well-deserved 1-0 lead.
The visitors created several dangerous chances despite holding 45 percent possession in the first half. Gotham finished the opening 45 minutes with six shots, two on target, consistently testing Chicago’s defense and goalkeeper.
The Stars responded with intensity after the break. In the 68th minute, they executed a clever short corner routine that caught Gotham’s defense out of position. Julia Grosso received the ball, curled in a precise cross, and Ally Schlegel met it with a thunderous header at the near post to level the score.
With the momentum shifting, Gotham’s goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger rose to the occasion. Despite being outshot 13-6, Berger made six crucial saves, including a spectacular stop on a close-range shot by Shea Groom in stoppage time, preserving the hard-earned point for Gotham.
In the closing minutes, Gotham pushed for a winner. Emily Sonnett soared above the defense to meet a cross with a powerful header in the 88th minute, forcing a sharp save from Naeher. The rebound fell to Jaelin Howell, whose follow-up attempt was blocked, denying Gotham a late victory.
The draw extends Gotham’s unbeaten streak to three matches and keeps them firmly in the playoff conversation. Still, after holding a lead for nearly half the match, the team will look back on this result as two points left behind on the road.
Gotham FC returns home to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Aug. 9, where they will host the Washington Spirit in their next NWSL contest.
