Inside the New York Rangers Early Season Success

By Meghan Lipscomb

Start spreading the news, the New York Rangers are back on top of the Metropolitan Division. After a centennial season of disappointment, the Blueshirts are bleeding back in the Big Apple. There are multiple reasons and factors why the Rangers are back at the top.

Better Puck Control

One of the major flaws that the Rangers had during the 2025-2026 season was that their puck control was underwhelming. As a team that has been around for a century, puck control should have been an easy concept for the Rangers. This season the Rangers are being smarter with puck possession. The team is passing the puck to multiple players and not just having one player control it.

Versatile Roster

Another reason why the Rangers are doing so well is that the roster is well-rounded this season. The Rangers have had issues with using their full roster. During the offseason, the Rangers had the opportunity to draft rookies from the Rangers draft class. The Rangers also took advantage of acquiring players from veteran teams. The Rangers targeted the Western Conference, more specifically the Pacific Division. Head coach Mike Sullivan and general manager Chris Drury evaluated the Pacific Division’s performance. Coach Sullivan aimed for players who have achieved major success analytically in the Winter Olympics and the Stanley Cup playoffs. Drury acquired Marcus Petterson and Pavel Dorofeyev. This move is now benefiting the Rangers in the regular season.

Goalie Goal

Igor Shesterkin has been the final aspect of the Rangers’ success. After having the off-season to recover and train to have more endurance for this season, the off-season training is now paying off. In the home opener, Igor did something that had never been done in Rangers history. Igor scored the first goalie goal in the history of the Blueshirts. The goal was also an empty-net goal.

Looking Forward

Even though it is the beginning of the season, the Rangers look better compared to past seasons. If they keep up this performance, the Rangers will be looking at a playoff spot at the end of the season.
