Jets Use Franchise Tag On Breece Hall

By Bailey Justin

It was deadline day for NFL teams to franchise tag players and the New York Jets used their non-exclusive tag on Running Back Breece Hall. The tag means that Hall will at least play one more season with New York barring a trade in which he will be paid a little over 14 million dollars.

Reports do have it though, that this is only a placeholder for the time being as New York does look to reach a long term agreement with Hall. With the non-exclusive tag though, Hall is able to go out in free agency and negotiate deals with other teams.

If Hall were to agree to a contract with another franchise, the Jets will have the rights to match that offer to bring Hall back. If New York chooses not to match that offer, then the team signing Hall would have to send New York two first round picks for the rights to Hall.

So basically, Hall is most likely going to be a New York Jet for the upcoming season unless he is traded. No team is going to dish out two first round picks for Hall unless they are quite frankly out of their minds.

This move simply by New York gives them a chance to work out a long term deal with Hall, have a team do the work for them so they can match, or in a crazy world lose Hall for two first round picks which would be an insane haul for the Jets to get.

In any of these scenarios, the Jets make it out well. They either keep Breece Hall as a major piece to their offense or they add even more draft capital for themselves.

Hall is one of the team’s most important assets and it would be terrible management if they were to lose him for nothing so giving him the tag was the smart move with hopes of extending him to a long term deal.

Just based on the fact that they would get two firsts for him makes me believe that no team will even go after Hall this offseason. The Jets have a stable offensive line that Hall can be effective behind. Hall had a one thousand yard rushing season this past year which made him the first Jets running back to do so since 2015.

This was another good move by the Jets front office as they are heading in the right steps going into free agency. Hall is a crucial part of the team and looks to be staying for the future.

Free agency begins on March 9 when the legal tampering period opens, and New York should be big players once again this free agency window. A lot of moves to be made to improve this team going into the 2026 season, but bringing back Hall is a great first move going into this period.
