When the New York Giants fired Brian Daboll midway through the 2025 season, the edict from ownership was that it was time for the team to start winning and the new coach would facilitate that. The blunt assessment…there needs to be an adult in the room going forward.
On Tuesday, the adult entered the Quest Diagnostic Training Center as John Harbaugh was introduced as the 21st head coach in franchise history. The Super Bowl-winning coach was hired to guide Big Blue back to relevancy after two seasons of chaos and undisciplined play on the field. As with all introductory press conferences, hopes were high that Harbaugh took center stage in his official introduction to New York/New Jersey.
“As we begin a new chapter in New York, our focus is simple, it starts with building a team that is physical and tough, that’s capable of overwhelming their opponent from beginning to end, and especially at the end, that understands how to finish, that is smart and disciplined, that plays the game the way it should be played, and that everybody watching it, including those playing it, would be proud of.”
According to a report from Ian O’Connor of The Athletic, Harbaugh wanted to instill a structure in which he would report not to general manager Joe Schoen but to ownership directly. After the press conference, Chris Mara said during a media scrum that “everyone will have a seat at the table for decisions”, including Harbaugh. This was obviously a major part of the story about New York’s pursuit of Harbaugh and he was asked about it during the press conference.
“To me, it’s really not that important in the big picture, in the big scheme of things. I think it’s kind of overblown just a little bit in terms of how it works. But the main thing is that it works and that we work together. That’s what matters. That’s kind of what I was used to, and it felt like a good way to kind of start off. I think Mr. Mara was happy about that. It seemed like it made sense. I’m just happy, but I don’t think it really matters. I think we’re all going to work together.”
“I promise you, we all report to the boss. And the boss is ownership.”
Among the meetings Harbaugh had with members of the organization was one with the Giants’ quarterback Jaxson Dart. Coming off an up-and-down rookie season, the seasoned coach will have his chance to mold the young but gunslinger-ish QB.
“I’m excited about Jaxson Dart. It starts with the quarterback for sure. You build your team around your quarterback. You build your team around your players and what they do well. I like the way he plays. I like his talent, skill set, all the things he’s accomplished, but more than that, I like who he is and what he’s about. To me, he’s about football. This young guy loves football. He wants to talk football all the time and that’s kind of what I like doing too. So, I think we’re going to have a lot of great conversations. I can’t wait to get started with him.”
Throughout the press conference, there were a lot of generalities and standard “it’s about football”-like terms, as was expected during the first day. What you saw was an excitement you may not have expected for a coach moving on from a job he had held for 18 years. After Harbaugh’s departure from Baltimore and Mike Tomlin’s move out of Pittsburgh, the landscape of the NFL and its coaches is changing. However, Harbaugh is very willing to go to great lengths to win in New York.
“There will be a relentless commitment to this organization, to this city and the fans to do things the right way every single day. Nothing will be taken for granted. It will always, always be all about the team. The team, the team, the team.”
Overall, Harbaugh was a hit with the assortment of Giants’ players that were in attendance (especially with Jameis Winston) and looked ready to take on the challenge of coaching in New York. He’s hoping the adult in the room locks in and gets the class in order, which will result in a Super Bowl, and does it with “an enthusiasm unknown to mankind”, a quote Jack Harbaugh used to say to his children and teams in past years.
