SAN JOSE — Rose Lavelle’s first-half goal was canceled out by Rachael Kundananji’s curling strike as Gotham FC drew 1-1 with Bay FC on Sunday night at PayPal Park, extending the club’s unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions.
Lavelle put Gotham ahead in the 36th minute after Midge Purce linked with Esther González, who turned and slipped a pass into Lavelle’s stride. The U.S. international slotted a low finish inside the far post for her second goal in three games, her second of the season, her 18th in NWSL regular season play and ninth since joining Gotham. González earned her first assist of the season, continuing her streak of goal contributions in four consecutive road matches.
Kundananji equalized for Bay in the 68th minute with a shot from 20 yards. Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger had little chance to stop it. Jaedyn Shaw earned her first NWSL start for the Bats, while Maddie Moreau nearly won it for Bay in stoppage time with a shot that rolled wide.
The draw kept Gotham (8-6-7, 31 points) in third place in the NWSL standings, level with Portland and San Diego but ahead on goal differential at plus-10. The Bats are now unbeaten in their last five league matches and remain undefeated against Bay in four all-time meetings (3-0-1). Gotham also improved to 6-0-3 when Lavelle scores and 4-0-1 when González records an assist.
“We knew this was going to be a difficult challenge,” Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said. “It wasn’t our best game today, but it was another point, another goal, another gritty performance from the players, and this is what this league is about — getting results when you can. The players have gone to the limit, and I’m very proud of how they’ve responded during this stretch away from home.”
Amorós said the stretch of three matches in 12 days showed the character of his squad.
“They are a special group of players. They want to get better, they want to win every single game, and they are ready to support each other to achieve that,” he said. “It’s very important now we keep growing together.”
Defender Lilly Reale said the team still sees room to grow despite extending its unbeaten run.
“There’s a lot to take out of this one, positive and somewhat negative,” Reale said. “Our standard needs to be a little bit higher, especially defensively, and we want to dominate more in possession. Obviously happy to come away with a point here, but we want more out of that one.”
Reale added that the team’s mentality has been tested by two weeks on the road. “Mentally we’ve been on the road for just about two weeks now, so that definitely takes a toll. But I think being able to come together as a team and grind it out is something we want to do to continue to build and push for the playoffs.”
Gotham struggled to find its usual connectivity, but with trips from San Diego to Vancouver to San Jose all in the span of a week, the travel and fatigue were clear factors in a sluggish performance. Still, the Bats avoided defeat and stretched their unbeaten run — a result the team can view as a positive under the circumstances.
Gotham returns home Friday to face the Portland Thorns at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Kickoff is 8 p.m. ET
