NBA fans, the decision has finally arrived. After a long-awaited wait, LeBron James has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8M deal. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

After James announced he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers at the end of June before free agency arrived, teams made their desired interest known for the next month. From the Philadelphia 76ers to the Golden State Warriors to the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and so many others, teams across the board had interest.
As many teams made their pitch to James, it was reported by ESPN weeks ago that the big-three of Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown recruited and talked to him as they all have different connections. The Sixers have had an absolutely crazy free agency this offseason with the new addition of signing James and trading for 2024 Finals MVP and Celtics Champion Jaylen Brown. Along with key bench signings of Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons and Ariel Hukporti.
James now returns to the East for the first time in his career since the 2017-2018 season when he was a part of the Cavaliers. James spent the majority of his career in the East where he dominated the conference since entering the league. There is no better story than starting his career in the East with the Cavaliers to ending his career in the same conference with a chance to compete for a championship.
As James enters the last stage of his career going into his 24th NBA season at age 41, he will now have one final chance to compete at the highest level before retiring. The Sixers are in “win now” mode as they try to compete for a championship. The team last won in the 1983 NBA finals, a 43 year drought. Over the past couple of years, the 76ers have struggled to make a deep run in the post-season. Now with the additions of James and Brown, among the other signings, the team is trying to get over the hump of its championship drought.
This offseason, the Eastern Conference has gotten extremely better. After the New York Knicks won the 2026 NBA Finals, teams from the Sixers to the Toronto Raptors to the Miami Heat and others have made big-time free agency moves to try to become the next champions. As the NBA hasn’t seen a team win back to back championships since the 2017 and 2018 Warriors, the league is now filled with parity. Teams are being more aggressive than ever to take their franchise over the hump as the NBA has had eight different champions the last eight years.
James now adds to a talented Sixers team with getting to play alongside Maxey, Embiid, Brown, and V.J. Edgecombe, and being coached by Nick Nurse who was a part of bringing Toronto its first and only championship back in 2019.
With the top free agent making his decision today, expect other dominoes to fall around the league as everyone has been waiting for a decision to be made while free agency is still underway.
