Mets walk off Pirates, Alonso’s sac fly seals 4-3 win

“Never Say Die” Mets: Alonso Walks Off Pirates in 4-3 Win

The Mets keep finding ways to win at Citi Field, improving to an impressive 16-4 at home after an electric 4-3 walk-off win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

Pete Alonso, yet again, proved why he’s the cornerstone of this team, sending a sacrifice fly deep enough to score Francisco Lindor from third and send the Citi Field Faithful home happy.

Peterson Holds His Own

David Peterson knew he had to bring his best stuff against Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and one of baseball’s most exciting young pitchers. Skenes, with his 2.77 ERA coming into today’s game, wasn’t at his sharpest, and Peterson matched the challenge pitch for pitch.

After giving up a solo homer to Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the second inning, Peterson locked in, retiring 10 straight batters. A fifth-inning double from Jared Triolo snapped the streak, but Peterson maintained his composure, grittily striking out Bryan Reynolds to escape trouble.

Mets Break Through

With both Skenes and Peterson dealing and essentially holding things down in the early innings, the Mets finally broke out offensively in the fourth. Brandon Nimmo sparked the rally with a double to right-center, followed by Jeff McNeil ripping his first double of the season to tie the game 1-1.

The game stayed tight from there, especially as both teams turned things over to the bullpen.

Trouble came when Peterson walked the first batter of the seventh, leading to José Buttó entering the fray. A stolen base-turned-error moved the runner to third, setting up a run-scoring groundout that briefly gave Pittsburgh the lead.

Chaos and Redemption

The Mets didn’t back down.  Tyrone Taylor was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh, stole second by the narrowest of margins, and was pushed to third on Luisangel Acuña’s infield single.

Juan Soto groundout tied it up, but the real drama came when Alonso’s deflected single sent Acuña sprinting home, narrowly beating the tag to give the Mets their first lead on the night. (*It’s worth noting that the Mets have won a handful of games on Acuña’s speed alone*)

Nimmo’s Acrobatics Keeps Mets Ahead

The bullpen took over, and Dedniel Nuñez worked a scoreless eighth, highlighted by Nimmo’s leaping catch to rob Joey Bart of a home run. In the ninth, Huascar Brazobán allowed Pittsburgh to tie it again after a Lindor error, but the Mets quickly erased the threat and kept things even with a slick double play.

Pete Alonso: Clutch McGutch (Again)

Lindor made up for his mistake in the bottom half of the ninth, reaching on an error. Soto followed with a single, putting runners on the corners.

Alonso then turned on a sweet-spot four-seamer, lifting a fly ball to deep right, with more than enough to bring Lindor home and seal the walk-off win.

Walk Off Winner: Alonso Delivers

With the Polar Bear crowned with a Double Bouble Gum bucket, it was another electric night at Citi Field, with another dramatic finish. These Mets just refuse to go quietly, and once again, it’s Alonso with the final word.
