As the sun set on Sprague Field, Montclair State University (5-6) and Rowan University (12-2) women’s lacrosse teams met for their second-to-last game of the regular season on April 23.
The Rowan Profs came into this game ranked No. 17 in Division III lacrosse.
The game finished with a complete breakdown of the Montclair State defense, ending in a 21-4 score.
Almost two minutes into the match, Rowan immediately got on the scoreboard with a goal by sophomore midfielder Madison Rothwein. From there, Rowan kept up a fast offensive pace, making it hard for the Montclair defense to keep up.
Throughout the first quarter, the Rowan Profs took 13 shots, six of which resulted in goals. Fiona Lockhart also ended the quarter with a hat trick.
On the Montclair side, although the Red Hawks were unable to find the net for most of the first quarter and struggled defensively, with two minutes left on the clock, senior midfielder Amra Lukovic was able to put Montclair State on the board.
During the second quarter, it was almost the same story. The Profs’ offense was dominant, scoring nine goals. Montclair State had only one shot in the entire quarter, and it resulted in a goal, bringing the score to 15-2 for Rowan and activating the running clock for the rest of the game.
By the end of the second quarter, four players had scored hat tricks: Fiona Lockhart, Yasmin Harris, Alexis Lowry, and Trish Gillen, continuing the Profs’ dominant offensive performance.
While not the best performance by Montclair, the Red Hawks continued playing and looking for opportunities to score. They were able to score at least one goal per quarter, while Rowan added six more goals throughout the third and fourth quarters, bringing the final score to 21-4.
Looking ahead to Saturday, the final game of the regular season has arrived, and Montclair State will travel to Union, NJ to face Kean University.
Rowan University will face No. 18 TCNJ in Glassboro in what should be an exciting season finale for both teams before the NJAC Tournament.
