Nets’ Michael Porter Jr. Named Potential Trade Candidate

By Jaiden Jordan

This week, reports of Nets’ Michael Porter Jr. have loomed in the NBA as the Brooklyn Nets have a decision to make.

This offseason Brooklyn Nets forward Porter Jr. is eligible to sign a big contract extension starting on July 6. If the two sides can’t reach an agreement this summer, league executives expect the Nets to listen for trade calls that was first reported by NBA insider, Michael Scotto.

Porter Jr. is entering the final year of his current five year, $179.3 million contract deal. It was originally signed with the Denver Nuggets before being traded to the Nets in June 2025. The final year of his contract is fully guaranteed at $40.8 million and he is eligible to sign an extension for up to four years, $234 million.

This past regular season (2025-2026), MPJ average a career-best 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. His offensive production skyrocketed as Porter Jr. was the clear number one option despite the team not performing at a good enough level.

Now the Nets and Michael Porter Jr are at an interesting spot as the team has many different ways they can turn to. This past season the Brooklyn Nets finished the season 13th in the Eastern Conference and with a record of 20-62.  In the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft that’s a few weeks away, the Nets have the sixth pick and two second round picks. Last year in the draft, the Nets selected five rookies in the first round which was the most in NBA history.

Do the Nets turn to fully going young or keep MPJ to go along with their team for the future? The Nets certainly have more than enough money to pay Porter Jr. going into the offseason. This summer, the Nets have the third most cap space in the entire NBA with $46.9 million to spend behind the Chicago Bulls and Los Angles Lakers.

NBA insider Michael Scotto, reported the primary team to have major interest in trading for Porter Jr. is the Golden State Warriors. Leading up to the February trade deadline, the Warriors aggressively pursued MPJ and even consider using a future first round pick to land him.

Now NBA fans will get to see if the Nets keep Porter Jr. or will they get value and trade MPJ away. Teams around the league will certainly be interested in Porter Jr.’s services but everyone will wait to see what unfolds as we get deep into the offseason.
