New Jersey’s Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver Hospitalized As Gov. Murphy Travels in Italy

Lt. Gov. Shelia Oliver has been hospitalized for an unknown illness, as Governor Murphy travels abroad on a family vacation in Italy.

State Senate President Nick Scutari will serve as acting governor in her stead.

Oliver is being treated Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and is “unable to discharge the duties of Acting Governor,” according to her spokesman Mahen Gunaratna.

“We wish the Lieutenant Governor well as she undergoes medical care. We will provide updates to the situation as they arise,” he wrote in a statement.

Governor Murphy is on a two-week vacation abroad in Italy, staying in his 23-room villa north of Rome in a town called Parrano. According to NJ.com, Murphy is slated to return to the state Aug. 13 and has no immediate plans to cut the trip short because of Oliver’s hospitalization.
