Not Elite: Is Bryce Harper Preparing for War in 2026?

By Alexis Sapp

Most, if not all, Americans are familiar with the “shot heard ‘round the world.” The first shot fired at the battles of Lexington and Concord marked the start of the Revolutionary War, changing the world forever.  A colonial dispute became a global conflict as America’s fight for Independence began on April 19, 1775.

On October 16, 2025 another shot was fired. And while the consequences are not nearly as far-reaching, or with such dramatic implications, it was heard ’round Philadelphia,’ and eventually the world, thanks to social media. In his first interview following the Phillies’ disappointing NLDS elimination, Dave Dombrowski called out his superstar, Bryce Harper, using the words “not elite” in a move that shocked many in and around baseball. While 250 years later we still do not know who fired the infamous first shot of the American Revolution, there is no question who fired the first shot in the battle between the Phillies front office and the face of the franchise. Dombrowski stated the following after being asked for the club’s view on Harper’s performance during the 2025 season:

“Of course, he’s still a quality player. He’s still an All-Star caliber player. He didn’t have an elite season like he has had in the past. And I guess we only find out if he becomes elite or if he continues to be good. I look around the league … Freddie Freeman. He’s a really good player, right? He still is a good player. Is he elite like he was before? Probably not to the same extent. Freddie’s a tremendous player. And, that to me, is Bryce. Can he rise to the next level again? I don’t really know that answer. I mean, really, he’s the one that will dictate that more than anything else, is what it comes down to. I don’t think he’s content with the year that he had. And, again, it wasn’t a bad year, but when I think of Bryce Harper, you’re thinking elite, you’re thinking one of the top 10 players in baseball, and I don’t think [his 2025 season] fit into that category. But, again, very good player.”

Stepping away from the issue at hand for just a moment, one cannot help but wonder how Freddie Freeman felt about being dragged into the conversation. His friendship with Bryce Harper is well known and it would be interesting to know if Bryce got a phone call asking him exactly what his President of Baseball Operations was thinking with those comments.

Disdain or Design? Inside Dombrowski’s Thinking

The local media, players, and fans were certainly wondering what Dave was thinking. Conflicting theories began to emerge immediately, some suggesting that Dave had never been a fan of the record-breaking $330 million dollar contract that brought the superstar here in 2019. The Phillies’ General Manager at the time was Matt Klentak, who ran the front office for the Phillies from 2015 until he stepped down in 2020.  Dave Dombrowski came on the scene shortly thereafter, and some speculate that he has had an issue with the Harper contract since he arrived in Philadelphia, further exacerbated by Bryce’s vocal desire for an extension. Others proclaimed Dombrowski a “motivational genius” asserting that the comments were intended to light a fire under a player known for performing well after being disrespected.

There is certainly a precedent when it comes to Bryce responding to adversity. No one will soon forget the firestorm Orlando Arcia of the Atlanta Braves unleashed after mocking Bryce Harper for his base running mistake that resulted in a game-ending double play in Game 2 of the 2023 NLDS, in which the Phillies fell 5-4. Arcia was heard yelling “Atta boy, Harper!” loudly and often in the Brave’s clubhouse following their win. This phrase quickly turned into a Philadelphia fan favorite t-shirt slogan for the rest of the 2023 playoff run. After learning about the comments, Harper responded by hitting two home runs in game 3 and savagely stared Arcia down as he rounded the bases both times. It was one of the moments in sports that make you stand up and take notice, and you immediately know it will forever occupy the space in your brain reserved for legendary sports moments.

Speculating that a seasoned front office veteran would put his relationship with his own superstar on rocky ground just to motivate him feels like more than a stretch. It seems more likely that he was simply caught in a candid moment and said exactly what was on his mind – that Bryce Harper may be on the decline and should probably stop asking for that extension.

Dombrowski later clarified that he was only referring to Harper’s 2025 season performance as “not elite”, not that Harper himself was no longer elite or would not be elite again.  He further expressed that the comments were meant as a compliment to Harper’s high standards.  Of course, that’s a perfectly prepared politically correct response from someone who has since realized their actions have consequences. Consequences in the form of a media frenzy and an interview with the Atlantic where Harper expressed that he was “hurt and disappointed” by the comments.  Considering the fact that Dombrowski did not end the original press conference on a note of confidence that his star would return to form in 2026, but instead hinted that he may actually have his doubts, makes his clarifying statements feel a bit like a bandaid on a bullet wound:

“Can he rise to the next level again? I don’t really know that answer. I mean, really, he’s the one that will dictate that more than anything else, is what it comes down to.”

While Dave’s true motivations may never be known, the aftermath has yet to fully reveal itself. It was reported in early November 2025 that the two had spoken and “cleared the air”, though the prevailing sentiment among the fans and media alike was that the issue was probably not fully resolved.

Flash forward to December 26, 2025, when a video went viral on TikTok showing the Phillies’ superstar wearing a shirt with a very short and sweet two word message:

“Not Elite”

Naturally, the first conclusion many drew was that Bryce is far from over the slight and decided to clap back without saying a word, instead opting to wear two very specific ones. It’s also possible he and Dombrowski really did clear the air, and they can already joke about the miscommunication.

The more likely scenario, and the one that all baseball fans, but especially Phillies fans should be excited about is this: Bryce Harper, a baseball icon who has been in the elite conversation since he was a high school prospect, is not going to soon forget the shot that was fired on October 16, 2025. Bryce Harper, who has been racking up the accolades since his Sports Illustrated cover appearance when he was dubbed “The Chosen One” at the age of 16 years old, is not going to be disrespected. Bryce Harper, who turned the Phillies franchise around and made Citizens Bank Park rock once more, is going to prove you wrong. “NOT ELITE” is the new “ATTA BOY, HARPER”.

Bryce Harper is going to war with his doubters in 2026.
