Sorokin Lets in 5 Straight in Islanders’ Loss to Bruins

By Mackenzie Connick

The New York Islanders were looking to bounce back in their Tuesday evening game against the Boston Bruins after a close shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. During the NHL’s Frozen Frenzy on October 28—where all 32 teams played—the Islanders shipped up to Boston for their ninth game of the season.

The first period started off with a bang for the New York team. Just over a minute into the period, Bo Horvat found a pass from Jonathan Drouin to snap the puck past Joonas Korpisalo on the Islanders’ first shot on goal. Horvat is off to a great start this season, with six goals, five assists, and sitting at a +6 rating.

A few minutes later, Mat Barzal found himself on the ground, drawing a delayed penalty. From his butt, Barzal was able to restart the play, allowing Ilya Sorokin to head to the bench and for Matthew Schaefer to start the sequence in the Islanders’ zone. A collection of quick passes through traffic in the Bruins’ end sent the puck from Horvat to Barzal, who hesitated for just a second, before sending the puck to Kyle Palmieri, who snapped it past Korpisalo.

With a two goal lead, one would think the Islanders could carry the momentum through the rest of the game: wrong. The Bruins scored five unanswered goals to steal the two points from the Islanders.

Sorokin has let in at least three goals in each of his seven starts, currently showing a 3.75 goals against average (GAA) and an .868 save percentage (SV%). Sorokin’s highest GAA in his career was a 3.01 in the 23-24 season.

The Islanders did produce 35 shots on goal to the Bruins’ 22. They were completely ineffective on the power play though, missing five chances, and allowing two goals on the penalty kill (out of four chances for Boston).

Overall, the Islanders still have some work to do. A four-game win streak does not a contender make.

The Islanders will look to improve on Thursday, October 30, in North Carolina against the Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m.
