The U.S. Men’s National Team has been drawn into Group D for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, giving the team a clear path to advance from the group stage and build momentum for the expanded knockout rounds. The Americans will face Paraguay, Australia and the winner of UEFA Playoff C, which will be determined in March 2026 and could feature Türkiye, Romania, Slovakia or Kosovo.
All three group-stage matches will be played in the United States. The U.S. will open its campaign on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles against Paraguay and play its second group-stage game on June 19 in Seattle against Australia. The final match, set for June 25 in Inglewood, California, will be against the UEFA Playoff C winner. Playing at home provides the Americans a significant advantage, reducing travel demands and allowing them to perform in front of supportive fans for every match.
Paraguay, ranked 39th in the FIFA world rankings, returns to the World Cup in 2026 after a 16-year absence, marking its ninth appearance overall. The South American team is in a transitional phase under coach Gustavo Alfaro, who took over in August 2024. Paraguay’s best World Cup performance came in 2010, when it reached the quarterfinals after advancing from the group stage, defeating Slovakia, drawing with New Zealand and Italy, and eliminating Japan on penalties before narrowly losing 1-0 to eventual champion Spain. The U.S. has recent experience against Paraguay, having won a 2-1 friendly in November, making the opening game at SoFi Stadium a key opportunity to establish momentum.
Australia, ranked 26th in the FIFA world rankings, offers a disciplined and experienced challenge. The Socceroos are making their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance, having qualified in 1974, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022, reaching the Round of 16 in 2006 and 2022. Australia secured direct qualification for 2026 with a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in June, avoiding playoffs for the first time since 2014. Under coach Tony Popovic, who took over in September 2024, the squad has blended new talent with experienced players. The U.S. holds a winning record against Australia, including a 2-1 friendly victory in October, and will look to capitalize on vulnerabilities shown in Australia’s qualification campaign, which included a loss to Bahrain and a draw with Indonesia. The June 19 match in Seattle will test the Americans’ ability to control tempo against a team capable of creating surprises.
The third opponent in Group D will be determined through UEFA Playoff C in March 2026. Türkiye, ranked 25th, would be the strongest potential opponent, returning to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2002, when it finished third. Slovakia, ranked 45th, is a defensively organized, physically strong team that reached the Round of 16 in 2010 but has had mixed results in recent qualifying and Nations League matches. Romania, ranked 47th, has been in strong form, going undefeated in its latest Nations League campaign while emphasizing defensive resilience and quick counterattacks. Kosovo, ranked 80th, is the lowest-ranked team but could pose a threat as a wildcard. While the U.S. would be favored against any of these potential opponents, Türkiye would likely present the biggest challenge, with Romania and Slovakia also able to field organized, confident squads and Kosovo posing a dangerous outsider threat.
My Thoughts
Group D is a favorable draw for the USMNT because it avoids traditional global powerhouses and features opponents the Americans have recently beaten. As a Pot 1 seed and co-host, the U.S. avoided top teams from Pot 2, such as Croatia, Morocco, Colombia and Uruguay, improving its chances of advancing and potentially winning the group. The team also has recent success against its confirmed opponents, having defeated both Australia and Paraguay in friendlies earlier in 2025, which provides confidence and valuable experience. Australia, the lowest-ranked team in Pot 2, is a manageable opponent, and Paraguay, while competitive and defensively resilient, is also considered a team the U.S. can overcome.
The fourth team, determined through a European playoff, could present some challenge, particularly Türkiye, but is generally less formidable than other potential European opponents. Playing all three group-stage games at home offers the U.S. an additional advantage, reducing travel fatigue and providing strong fan support. The combination of ranking superiority, home-field advantage, and recent victories makes Group D an opportunity for the Americans to build early momentum, gain confidence and potentially make a deep run in the World Cup.
