‘Blue Beetle’ Director Angel Manuel Soto Talks Inclusivity, Family, and Edison’s Susan Sarandon

‘Blue Beetle’ is the first Latino superhero to hit the big screen in the DC Universe. The film stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes- a college graduate who arrives home to find his family struggling financially.  He meets Jenny Kord, heiress of Kord Industries, a colossal tech company run by her great-aunt, Victoria Kord, played by Susan Sarandon.  Jenny gives Jaime an ancient alien scarab to protect, which in turn chooses him to be its host. He discovers superpowers within the suit, and himself, with the help of his close-knit family. Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, and George Lopez also star in the film.

Director Ángel Manuel Soto sat down with On New Jersey’s Kristina Behr to talk about the importance of inclusivity in the film, family influence, and why Edison native Susan Sarandon was the perfect fit to play his villain.

The movie is in theaters now.
