Catherine Whiteford, Young Republican National Federation
A 2024 Ukrainian law bans religious groups tied to the Russian Orthodox Church, and it has put the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, one of the country’s largest, at risk of being shut down. A court case to dissolve the church’s Kyiv leadership began this summer. Church leaders say their priests are being denied the draft exemptions that other clergy receive, while Ukraine’s government says the church remains under Moscow’s control during wartime. Catherine Whiteford, co-chair of the Young Republican National Federation, tells Bill why this issue is a priority for her and responds to the national security argument. She also describes what believers on the ground are experiencing and what it means that more than 10,000 believers have asked to join the court case. Then she weighs in on how President Zelensky should balance wartime security with religious freedom, whether religious freedom should be a condition of continued American aid, what Congress and the administration should do, and why Americans and New Jersey’s people of faith should pay attention.
