Chatman BOE Decision – Alexandra Bougher, Moms for Liberty

October 30, 2026

The Chathams Board of Education in Morris County voted 7 to 0 to settle a federal lawsuit filed by Moms for Liberty. The suit targeted a 2024 policy that let school counselors decide whether parents should be told when a student asked to use a different name or pronouns. The district admitted no wrongdoing and had already dropped the policy in September. Alexandra Bougher of Moms for Liberty explains why the group sued and why it saw the policy as a threat to parents. She talks about the threats and harassment the anonymous parent plaintiffs described, what the settlement requires, and why a written agreement still mattered. She also says whether she’s satisfied, given that the settlement doesn’t require the advance parental notice the lawsuit sought. She responds to supporters who say policies like this protect students, says whether she expects more lawsuits in New Jersey districts that adopted the state’s model policy, and shares her advice for parents with similar concerns.
