Chronic Knee Pain

February 12, 2026

For millions of people living with knee osteoarthritis, chronic pain can make even everyday movement a challenge. Traditionally, treatment options have ranged from medications and injections to major joint replacement surgery, but now, a new minimally invasive procedure is offering hope to patients who aren’t ready for, or can’t undergo, surgery.

Rutgers Health and University Hospital in Newark are among the first academic medical centers in our region to offer this advanced treatment, known as Genicular Artery Embolization, or GAE, an image-guided procedure designed to reduce inflammation and relieve knee pain without an operation.

Joining us now to explain how it works and who may benefit is Dr. Abhishek Kumar, Chief of Interventional Radiology at Rutgers Health and University Hospital.
