Concerns About Mobile Health Apps and Generative AI Tools

Millions of Americans turn to mobile apps for help with everything from fitness to mental health, but when it comes to substance use reduction, experts warn that many of the apps people download may be unregulated, untested, and in some cases, unsafe.

A new commentary published in the Journal of the American Medical Association raises concerns about mobile health apps and generative artificial intelligence tools that claim to help people reduce or quit substance use, often without scientific evidence or proper oversight.

Joining us this morning is Jon-Patrick Allem, Associate Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Rutgers and senior author of the JAMA commentary, to help us understand the risks, and how consumers can protect themselves while navigating the app store.
