Groundbreaking New Study on Obesity

November 11, 2025

A groundbreaking new study is challenging how we think about obesity, and it could affect millions of Americans.

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the research suggests that the traditional Body Mass Index, or BMI, may no longer be the best way to define obesity. Instead, it proposes a more nuanced approach, one that includes waist circumference and other body measurements to better predict health risks.

Under this new definition, nearly 70% of American adults could now qualify as having obesity, a dramatic jump from the current estimate of 43%.

To help us understand what this all means for patients and physicians, we’re joined this morning by Dr. Jeffrey Kraft, a leading expert in bariatric and metabolic health with Hackensack University Medical Center.
