As the nation prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, a new student-led exhibition here in New Jersey is shining a light on stories that have long been left out of the history books. Foundation Academies, in partnership with the Princeton Battlefield Society, is unveiling “Men W/O Shoes,” a first-of-its-kind multimedia exhibit that uncovers the lives of 14 Black soldiers who fought in the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, many of whom marched barefoot and, in some cases, fought in place of their enslavers.
Researched and created by 30 high school scholars, the project combines archival investigation with modern storytelling tools, including a documentary, and an original art installation. The exhibition opens today at Morven Museum & Garden and aims to place these soldiers’ contributions at the center of America’s founding story during the 100th anniversary of Black History Month.
Joining us this morning are two of the advisors who guided the students behind this powerful work, Earl Wallace and Casey Scott. Thank you both for being here.
