News Update: Expansion of Schools

A Middlesex County man was arrested after police found him in the Sayreville High School parking lot – next to a burning vehicle, with the body of his 9-year-old son inside. 41-year-old Manuel Rivera faces several charges, including first-degree murder.

Former New Jersey politician Peter Shapiro has died at the age of 71. Shapiro was the youngest person ever to be elected to the state Assembly and became the first-ever Essex County executive. He was the democratic candidate for governor in 1985.

Construction for the expansion project at Somerset County Vocational and Technical Schools is underway. The expansion will cost 23 million dollars and allow enrollment to increase by more than one thousand students.

A federal judge has struck down New Jersey’s ballot design, after a lawsuit by Democratic Representative Andy Kim, who is running for Senate. Kim says the design, which allows parties to place their endorsed candidates in a specific portion of the ballot, is unfair and unconstitutional.
