Wayne Valley Gymnasts Take Down Wayne Hills in Cross-Town Rivalry Meet

By Christopher Shannon

WAYNE – It was exactly a week ago that the Wayne Valley gymnastics team welcomed Wayne Hills to their gym after an equipment failure before Hills’ meet against Mount Olive meant that the uneven bars rotation would need to take place at Wayne Valley High School.  When the Wayne Hills gymnasts visited Wayne Valley this time around, however, the hosts were not so welcoming, securing a 99.600 – 96.000 victory over their cross-town rivals.

Valley was led by Kylie Turco, who finished with top honors in the all-around and placed in the top three in every individual event.  In the all-around, Turco finished with a 33.825 to place ahead of Hills’ Izabella Ortiz, who finished second with a 33.100, and teammate Bianca Riccobono, who finished in third with a 32.775.

Wayne Valley started the meet with a sweep of the top three spots on the vault.  Maddie D’Alessandro led the way for the Indians, scoring an 8.65 to place first.  She was followed by Turco in second with an 8.55 and Riccobono in third with an 8.5.

In the second rotation, Turco took the top spot on the uneven bars for Valley with an 8.775.  She was followed by Ortiz, who finished in second with an 8.525, and D’Alessandro, who finished in third with an 8.15.

D’Alessandro led another Wayne Valley sweep on the balance beam.  D’Alessandro led the way with an 8.4 to finish ahead of Turco in second with an 8.375 and Riccobono in third with an 8.225.

Hills notched their only event win of the meet on the final event of the evening.  Ortiz secured a first-place finish on the floor exercise with an 8.175.  She eked out top honors by 0.05 of a point over Turco, who finished in second with an 8.125.  Riccobono rounded out the top three on the floor with a 7.975.

With their win over Wayne Hills, Wayne Valley completes their regular season and will look forward to the Passaic County Championship at West Milford High School on Oct. 15, while Hills will complete their regular season on Friday when they visit Montclair.
