Lane Johnson announced his retirement this past Tuesday, October 6 after 14 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was a two-time Super Bowl Champion, six-time pro-bowler, and a five-time all-pro. Johnson spent his entire career as an Eagle and will be a Hall of Famer one day.
The retirement announcement came at a shocking time. It was only four games into the NFL season. Johnson’s key words were that he wanted to prioritize his mental health and have time with his family. Philadelphia is now 2-2 on the season and the past two weeks have been really bad signs. In Week 3, they lost to the Bears 27-7 in which the veteran quarterback Case Keenum was sensational. In Week 4, Philly had a 20-10 lead in the fourth quarter and they would lose to the Rams at home.
The Eagles traded Cam Jurgens and a 2027 seventh round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2027 fifth round pick and a 2028 second round pick. Jurgens was a two-time pro-bowler, and a Super Bowl Champion. Baltimore was able to address their need at center after the Jurgens trade. Philadelphia gains financial flexibility and draft capital. Jurgens is in concussion protocol and is not expected to play this Sunday. He is expected to make his debut for the Ravens next Sunday vs the Browns.
The offensive line this season for the Eagles hasn’t been good. In fact, it is a far cry from what it has been for a long time. Philly’s offensive line was very key for the Eagles success as so many things opened up for them. The offense is still an issue and the status for DeVonta Smith along with Saquon Barkley is still up in the air as both of them are dealing with hamstring injuries.
Philadelphia’s projected OL in Week 5 looks like: LT Jordan Mailata, LG Willie Lampkin, C Drew Kendall, RG Tyler Steen, and RT Markel Bell. In Week 1, it was very different with LT Mailata, LG Landon Dickerson, C Cam Jurgens, RG Steen, and RT Lane Johnson.
The Eagles’ next few weeks aren’t easy and we could see a troubling time in the City Of Brotherly Love.
