Deep into the NFL offseason and free agent wide-receiver Stefon Diggs is yet to be signed by a team.
Back at the start of the new league year in March, the New England Patriots released Diggs due to financial reasons with the team’s salary cap. Diggs played one season with the Patriots after coming off a torn right ACL when he was a part of the Houston Texans. This past season as the Patriots primary receiver, Diggs played all 17 games and had 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
During Diggs’ season with the Patriots, there were reports of a dispute between Diggs and his chef back in December 2025. A few weeks after the Patriots Super Bowl lost to the Seattle Seahawks in early March, Diggs was arrested by the police after a jury issued an indictment. A few months later in May 2026, the jury found Diggs not guilty after his trial which ended the case. The NFL closed its own investigation a month later on June 12, 2026. With training camps starting for all 32 teams in the next couple of weeks, Diggs continues to be unsigned.
One team in the NFC East who should look to sign Diggs and follow the Patriots formula is the New York Giants. Last year after the Patriots signed Diggs along with other offseason additions, no one in the NFL world expected much of the Patriots going into the year. The previous season, the Patriots were 4-13 in Drake Maye’s rookie year and fired head coach Jered Mayo at the end of the season in his one year stint. In the offseason, the Patriots hired head coach Mike Vrabel, signed Stefon Diggs and other offseason additions to flip the switch to a 14-3 team that won the AFC East and went all the way to the Super Bowl.
This past season in New York, the Giants finished the season at 4-13 after another disappointing year. In the middle of the season head coach Brian Daboll was fired, with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka serving as the interim head coach to finish the year. Despite the Giants’ struggles, QB Jaxson Dart showed promise in his rookie season similar to Drake Maye in his rookie year. Dart had 2,272 passing yards with 15 passing touchdowns and nine rushing touchdowns. After the Giants season, the Giants hired former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.
Similar to the Patriots in last year’s offseason, the Giants picked up a few key offseason additions. The Giants had key signings such as Tight End Isaiah Likely, Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, Wide Receiver Darnell Mooney and others. Like the Patriots, the Giants picked up an established head coach in the league along with helping their franchise quarterback going into year two.
As currently constructed, the Giants are log-jammed at wide receiver with carrying 14 receivers on their 90-man offseason roster. On the first day of June, the Giants signed veteran receivers Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith Schuster, and Braxton Berrios after their offseason workout with the team. Despite carrying all these receivers and players, going into the offseason and training camp, the Giants shouldn’t stop from being aggressive pursuing Diggs.
Out of all the remaining NFL free agents, Diggs is arguably the best free agent that’s available. At 32 years old, Diggs is still more than valuable to all 32 NFL team’s. With the Patriots, Diggs was a productive player all year long and was a great leader for the young New England team. Diggs could step into the Giants and be a number two wide-receiver to Malik Nabers. Currently, Nabers is rehabbing from a torn ACL and torn meniscus as his status to start the season remains in question. This past season with the Patriots, Diggs showed he can still be a number one receiver for a team in the league. He can be a valuable player who helps Jaxson Dart and the team.
Diggs remains one of many NFL Free Agents that are available on the market for all 32 teams. With NFL training camp approaching soon, teams will evaluate to see if they can add any position players to add and improve their roster in the coming months.
