After five seasons, the New York Knicks have relieved Head Coach Tom Thibodeau of his duties after losing in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers.
Thibodeau brought the Knicks to the playoffs four of his five seasons with the team and this season marked the first time the Knicks made it to the conference finals since the 2000 season.
His coaching style was heavily criticized by people around the league and fans, as he would rely on his starters to do a lot of the lifting and give the bench little to no playing time.
As head coach of the Knicks Thibodeau had a record of 226-174 but that was not good enough for the front office, as they look to compete for a championship.
After the firing the team’s official X account posted a statement from team president Leon Rose.
An excerpt from his statement is below:
“Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans. This pursuit led us to the difficult decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we’ve decided to move in another direction.”
The firing came on Tuesday, a couple days after the Knicks lost to the Pacers.
After that game, star Point Guard Jalen Brunson said that he believed in coach Thibodeau when asked by a reporter. “Did you just ask me if I believe that he’s the right guy? Yes,” said Brunson.
As the Knicks look to move in a different direction, it will be an interesting offseason to say the least.
There are a lot of coaches out there that the Knicks can choose from to come lead this squad.
Former Nuggets head coach Mike Malone is a name that might interest the Knicks front office as they look for someone who can guide them to a championship.
Malone won a championship a few years ago with the Denver Nuggets back in 2023. Coach Malone also has some history with the Knicks, he started his NBA Coaching career in New York as an assistant coach back in 2003.
Another name that comes to mind and may be the most intriguing is Mark Jackson.
The former Knicks Point Guard, Jackson is always a name that is buzzing around the league every offseason for head coaching vacancies, his last coaching job was with the Golden State Warriors.
His time in Golden State was cut short when the organization hired Steve Kerr in 2014, and since then Jackson has yet to get another shot.
There are also other intriguing candidates out there that could be up for the challenge. Frank Vogel, Mike Budenholzer, former Villanova coach Jay Wright, and Sam Cassel are just a few more names that may intrigue the Knicks as they look to bring in a new voice to take over the locker room.
