Dudley Delivers as Gotham FC Defeats Houston, Extends Unbeaten Run to Six

By David Macaulay-Smith

HARRISON — Gotham FC entered Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Dash looking to respond after a disappointing week in Mexico, and the Bats did exactly that, grinding out a 1-0 victory at Sports Illustrated Stadium to close the first half of the NWSL season on a positive note.

Rookie forward Jordynn Dudley scored the lone goal of the match in the first half, while goalkeeper Shelby Hogan stepped in admirably for the injured Ann-Katrin Berger, helping Gotham secure another clean sheet and extend its unbeaten run in league play to six matches.

With Berger unavailable, Hogan was handed the start between the posts and was rarely troubled thanks to another dominant defensive performance from Gotham. The hosts controlled much of the game from the opening whistle and came close to an early breakthrough in the 13th minute.

Dudley got in behind the Houston defense and found herself through on goal, but Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell came up with a strong save to keep the match scoreless.

Five minutes later, the rookie would not be denied.

In the 18th minute, Tierna Davidson delivered a perfectly weighted ball over the top that released Dudley behind the Houston backline. A favorable bounce helped the forward get beyond Houston defender Lisa Boattin. Dudley made the most of the opportunity, rifling a left-footed strike into the top corner for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Gotham lead.

The goal capped another impressive performance from the rookie, whose growing confidence continues to make her an important attacking option for Juan Carlos Amorós’ side.

Gotham continued to dictate play after halftime and nearly doubled its advantage in spectacular fashion in the 52nd minute. Esther González attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick inside the penalty area that had the crowd rising from their seats. However, Campbell was well-positioned to make the save.

Despite holding just a one-goal lead, Gotham rarely looked uncomfortable. The Bats controlled possession, managed the tempo effectively, and limited Houston’s opportunities to threaten the equalizer.

The hosts thought they had put the game away in the 84th minute when Midge Purce burst down the right wing and squared a ball across goal for Rose Lavelle to tap home. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the assistant referee ruled the ball had crossed out of play before Purce’s cross, wiping away what would have been Gotham’s second goal.

The decision ultimately proved inconsequential as Gotham comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure all three points.

Following the match, head coach Juan Carlos Amorós praised his squad’s response after the Concacaf W Champions Cup Finals and highlighted the collective effort that helped Gotham return to winning ways.

“I’m really proud of the team,” Amorós said. “After the Mexico trip, it was important for us to come back here and be ourselves. From start to finish, every single player gave everything. We dominated every aspect of the game.”

The Gotham manager also reserved special praise for Hogan, who stepped into a difficult situation and delivered when called upon.

“For the goalkeepers that are not playing regularly, it’s difficult to always be ready,” Amorós said. “Shelby was outstanding today. She’s such a great human being and so important for the changing room. She pulled off a great save and was really good. The goalkeeper unit is doing a fantastic job.”

Hogan echoed the importance of finishing the first half of the season with a victory before the upcoming break.

“Coming away from our trip down to Mexico, we were disappointed with the results,” Hogan said. “We knew how important it was to get a win and three points today before heading into the international break and CBA break. We’re super happy to walk away with three points and feel good going into the second half of the season.”

The goalkeeper also credited the team effort behind another shutout.

“Our defense from the back line all the way to the front line was great throughout the game,” Hogan said. “I didn’t have a ton to do, but when those moments came, I wanted to make sure I took care of them.”

‘The victory sends Gotham into the summer break on a high note, with another clean sheet added to what has become the league’s stingiest defense. The Bats will return to action on June 26 when they face the Kansas City Current in the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio.
