Eagles Down Chiefs in Super Bowl Rematch

By Earl Spence

The Eagles traveled to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a highly-anticipated Super Bowl Rematch. The last time these two teams met it was Super Bowl LIX (59) and the Eagles blew out the Chiefs 40-22. The Chiefs looked to get revenge after an embarrassing performance in the NFL’s biggest game. The Eagles are coming off a win against their division rival Cowboys 24-20. The Chiefs are coming off a loss against their division rival Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo 27-21.

In the first quarter it was a punt fest until the end of the quarter. Saquon Barkley rushed for a 13-yard touchdown and Jake Elliot kicked in a field goal which gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter, Mahomes kept scrambling for his life, gaining a key 22-yard run which set up a Harrison Butker field goal. On 4th and 4, Mahomes passed to Travis Kelce for an 18 yard gain. Patrick Mahomes did it with his legs again, scrambling right and running into the endzone which gave the Chiefs the lead along with a Harrison Butker kick that had the Chiefs up 10-7.

Jake Elliot the Eagles kicker nailed a 58 yard field goal to even the score at 10 a piece heading into halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Chiefs had a turnover on downs after having a fumble but ultimately recovering the ball. Jake Elliot would kick in a 51 yard field goal which gave the Eagles a 13-10 lead.

In the 4th quarter it would be a thriller. At the start of the 4th it was 4th and 1 in Philly territory as Kareem Hunt rushed it and it would be 1st and goal. The Chiefs looked to take the lead as Mahomes threw a pass to Kelce, which bobbled out of his hands and was intercepted by Eagles safety Andre Mukuba. Mukuba then ran it back for 41 yards. On 3rd and 10 Jalen Hurts threw a 28-yard pass to Devonta Smith for 1st goal in Chiefs territory.

On 4th and goal the famous tush push came into play as Jalen Hurts got into the endzone for the touchdown and the field goal was good to give the Eagles a 20-10 lead. Both teams would punt in back to back possessions. The Chiefs had possession as Mahomes had a wide open receiver in Tyquan Thorton but it was too far in front. The two would be able to connect this time as Mahomes threw a 49-yard bomb into the endzone to cut the score into 20-17 as Butker nailed the field goal. The Eagles would have possession as Saquon Barkley had a key nine-yard run. Hurts would run for two yards that would ice the game for a Philadelphia win 20-17.

The Chiefs are 0-2 for the first time since 2014 which was Andy Reid’s second season as head coach with Kansas City. The Chiefs next travel to Metlife Stadium to take on the New York Giants for Sunday Night Football September 21 at 8:20 p.m. The Eagles play the Los Angeles Rams at home in a divisional round rematch of last season 1 p.m. this Sunday September 21.
