Fight to the Finish: Phillies Out slug D-Backs in Wild Weekend Series

By Jordan Beaudoin

The Philadelphia Phillies had another busy weekend at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia this weekend as they took on the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Phillies did not entirely sweep the Diamondbacks, but they did take home two out of three wins from this series.

The matchup kicked off Friday night and saw the Phillies pull out a 3-2 victory. The Phillies starting pitcher, Jesus Luzardo took the mound and only allowed two runs during the five and a half innings before things went over to the bullpen. The Diamondbacks held on the lead into the seventh until both Kyle Schwarzenegger and Max Kepler hit back-to-back solo home runs, turning things around for this Philadelphia team, allowing them to bring the first of this season’s series.

Saturday night was a different story for both teams. Aaron Nola was the starting pitcher for Philadelphia in game two. He had six shutout innings and struck out eight to earn his first win for this season. The Phillies offense also pulled through putting up seven runs during the entire game. It started with J.T. Realmuto’s three-run blast in the second inning and Max Kepler followed with a two-run shot, giving the Phillies team a huge 6-0 lead by the third inning. The Diamondbacks tried to put life back into their team in the seventh inning with Lourdes Gurriel Jr, with a two home run but it wasn’t enough to allow Arizona to win.

The big finale for this series was wild. Arizona took a lead of 7-1 early on in this game, The Phillies did everything they could to find their way back. Schwarber hit his league-leading 11th home run and the Phils pulled back in to give them an 8-8 tie at the bottom of the ninth. This game went into extra innings. However, the Phillies lost in the tenth when Diamondbacks Josh Naylor hit an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk was issued to Geraldo Perdomo to put the Arizona team on top. The Phillies fell in this game 11-9 in the extra innings.

They were just short of a sweep. These two teams will play again in Phoenix, Arizona in late September of this year. It will be their final regular season matchup.
