Jaxson Dart Takes the Field in Giants’ First Preseason Game

Giants fans got their first look at rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart on Saturday afternoon as he took the field against the reigning AFC East champs, the Buffalo Bills. But before that, everyone got a taste of what Russell Wilson will bring to this team.

After six seasons of Daniel Jones, a.k.a. “Danny Dimes,” it was refreshing to see an experienced quarterback who exudes leadership and is decisive with the ball. Wilson was calm and cool in the pocket, with an awareness on the field that has been sorely missing from Giants’ QB play in recent years.

Wilson went 6-for-7 for 28 yards, leading to a field goal by Graham Gano. His ability to stay efficient on drives while managing the game should have a significant impact on the Giants’ offense  which is something a long-suffering fanbase deserves.

But all eyes were on rookie Jaxson Dart, who finished the day 12-for-19 for 154 yards and one touchdown. Dart connected with Lil’Jordan Humphrey on a 29-yard strike for his first career touchdown.

Dart Takeaways:

  • Didn’t stare down receivers

  • Made plays with his legs

  • Found throwing lanes

  • Efficient

  • Aware

  • Athletic

Dart is already doing the things an NFL quarterback should be doing which is more than Giants fans could say for the past six years.

When Brian Daboll was asked about Dart’s performance in Buffalo, he said:

“It’s about what I thought he would do. Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket. Still stuff we can work on, but he’s doing good.”

It’s been a while since New York has seen an upbeat and energized Brian Daboll. One has to wonder if drafting “his guy” at quarterback factors into the coach having a little more pep in his step this season.

With the small sample we’ve seen from Wilson and Dart, Giants fans should feel encouraged: the organization finally has a plan at quarterback and it might just be better than we expected.

The Giants will take on the Jets next Saturday, August 16, at MetLife Stadium in their second preseason game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
