Hoosier #2 Now? Rutgers Men’s Soccer Stuns Indiana

By Stefano Gangemi

Without a doubt one of the most competitive conferences in NCAA men’s soccer is the Big Ten. Using the current standings to determine the outcome of a match will be of little benefit to the predictor, as proven by this most recent matchday. Rutgers University men’s soccer delivered one of its most impressive results of the season Friday night, handing second-ranked Indiana University its first defeat of the campaign with a 1-0 victory at home.

Rutgers came into the match at 3-3 in conference play while Indiana sat top of the table having not lost all season with four wins and a draw. You would be forgiven for believing that the likelihood of a Scarlet Knights’ win would be nearly impossible, but soccer is not played on hypotheticals, it’s played on a pitch.

Indiana earned their national ranking of #2 following their exceptional 10-0-2 start to their schedule, while Rutgers recently fell out of the top 25 after their recent run of mixed results included four wins (three against top 11 opponents) and three losses. This set the stage for a matchup where Rutgers could equal their highest ranked opponent ever beaten.

The last time Rutgers beat the second ranked team in the nation was Evansville in the 1990 NCAA National Semifinal Final Four. Additionally, the last time Rutgers beat Indiana was just under four years ago on November 6, 2022 in the Big Ten Championship game that saw Rutgers win its first title in its history.

Throughout the season both teams had established reliable methods of victory which they both attempted to turn to throughout the match. For Rutgers it has been their incredible sturdy defense and contrary to that for Indiana, it has been their goal scoring. No two individuals represent these strengths better than Rutgers defender Nick Collins and Indiana forward Oliver Moller-Jensen. The first 45 minutes saw the former get the better of his opponent with the Indiana forward, who already has 10 goals this season, registering only one shot on target. The first half played out fairly evenly and the 0-0 scoreline was fitting given both teams had similar shooting statistics: Rutgers with five and Indiana with four.

The second half saw the aforementioned forward and Indiana top scorer, Moller-Jensen substituted with the Hoosiers looking to modify their tactics to break down the well-organized Scarlet Knights’ backline. One could argue his change in methodology may have worked as they did end up registering 5 shots in the second half, but none were able to find the back of the net. Rutgers on the other hand, saw a dramatic uptick in chances created as they would accrue nine more shots in the second half alone.

The pivotal moment of the match would come in the 72nd minute courtesy of NYCFC forward Francesco Di Ponzio. The senior forward from Oakland, NJ dribbled with pace at the Indiana defense and attempted a left-footed strike on goal, this effort would be deflected by a Hoosier defender and fall to the attacker’s right foot. Exemplifying his ambipedal talent, Di Ponzio met the ball with a finesseful impact guiding it past the Indiana goalkeeper Michal Mroz. The surge of euphoria was personified by Di Ponzo’s teammates, both substitutes and onfield colleagues alike, as they swarmed the goal scorer at the corner flag in a sea of black.

The remainder of the match played out as the the vast majority of the previous portion of it did, with Rutgers maintaining their exceptional organization and Indiana frustratingly not capitalizing on the rest of the opportunities they were able to manufacture. Rutgers saw out a monumental victory, in doing so picking up their fourth clean sheet, whilst Indiana registered their first loss of the season along with failing to score for the first time in a game.

The consequence of this outcome sees the top four schools in the Big Ten standings locked into a tightly contested competition for top honors with each of Michigan State (16 points), Indiana (13 points), Washington (13 points), and Rutgers (12 points) now on four wins on the season.

Rutgers has undoubtedly disrupted Indiana’s dominance and created history in the process. The pandemonium in Piscataway not only shook up Yurcak Field, but also the Big Ten as far away as Seattle. This marked Rutgers fourth top 11 ranked victory thus far and the Scarlet Knights will look to build on this momentum as they take on Penn State at University Park on Tuesday October 20 at 7 p.m.
