SEATTLE, WASH. — Jaedyn Shaw continued her strong run of form and Tierna Davidson scored her first regular-season NWSL goal in nearly seven years as Gotham FC defeated Seattle Reign FC 2-0 Friday night at Lumen Field to extend its unbeaten streak to five matches.
The victory was Gotham’s fourth during its unbeaten run and improved the club’s record to 5-2-3 with 18 points. Gotham also recorded its seventh clean sheet through 10 league matches, continuing one of the league’s best defensive starts to a season.
Playing under acting head coach Shaun Harris, who managed the club in place of Juan Carlos Amorós following the recent birth of Amorós’ second child, Gotham overcame an uneven opening stretch before taking control through its pressing and possession.
“It’s a really positive performance and result for the team,” Harris said. “The first 10 or 15 minutes were a little bit shaky trying to find our rhythm, but once we settled down and got that goal early in the first half, it really settled us down and we were able to set the tone a little bit more. I thought we controlled the game really well.”
Gotham’s press consistently disrupted Seattle’s buildup play throughout the match, forcing turnovers high up the field and limiting the Reign’s ability to switch the ball into space.
“We wanted to get that pressure running as high and as early as possible,” Harris said. “We wanted to stop them playing those passes and make sure we forced them one side. I thought our forwards and the players behind them did that really well.”
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute after rookie forward Jordynn Dudley spun her defender to the ground near the top of the box before slipping a pass into Savannah McCaskill. McCaskill’s mishit effort rolled directly into the path of Shaw, who reacted quickly, turned and fired a right-footed finish into the net for a 1-0 lead.
The goal continued a strong stretch for Shaw since returning from injury. The 21-year-old now has four goal contributions in her last four matches, including an assist against the Chicago Stars FC and goals against Racing Louisville FC, Boston Legacy FC and Seattle. Her fourth goal of the season moved her into a tie for fourth in the NWSL scoring race.
“We’re super pleased,” Harris said of Shaw. “Since she’s come back from her injury, she’s taken it up another level. Not just on the ball, but defensively too. She really understands what needs to be done. If somebody can get her the ball in those spaces, it’s just let Jaedyn be Jaedyn. She’s a top player.”
The Bats controlled possession through the remainder of the first half while limiting Seattle to few meaningful chances, with the Reign struggling to play through Gotham’s high press.
Gotham doubled its lead in the 57th minute on a set piece, an area Harris said the club “really, really focused on during the week”. Guro Reiten delivered a corner kick that was flicked back across goal by Jaelin Howell inside the penalty area. McCaskill kept the play alive before combining with Sofia Cook, whose low effort was redirected home from close range by Davidson.
Davidson’s goal was her first in regular-season NWSL play in 2,459 days, dating back to her rookie season with the Chicago Red Stars. The defender missed nearly all of last season because of a knee injury and joked afterward that she did not know how to celebrate scoring.
“I said to Sofia, excellent work keeping it low and on frame because it gives us an opportunity for ricochets and one-touches,” Davidson said. “That’s kind of my job there, to reshape in the box. Honestly, it was a little bit of a shock that it came to me.”
Gotham nearly added a third in the 69th minute on another corner when Midge Purce was left unmarked at the back post, but her left-footed shot from close range struck the woodwork.
Seattle’s best chance arrived late in the match when Brittany Ratcliffe broke through on goal in the 85th minute, but goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made a crucial one-on-one save to preserve the clean sheet.
The shutout was Berger’s seventh of the season as Gotham continued its dominant defensive run. After scoring just two goals through its opening five matches, Gotham has since scored nine times while conceding only once during its unbeaten streak.
Friday’s win also served as another encouraging performance before Gotham shifts its focus to the Concacaf W Champions Cup finals in Mexico. Gotham will face Club América Femenil in the semifinal round Wednesday at Estadio Hidalgo.
