UNION — A late first-half goal proved to be the difference Wednesday evening as Moravian University handed the Kean University men’s soccer team a 1-0 defeat at Kean Alumni Stadium.
The Cougars matched the Greyhounds in total shots and shots on goal, but a defensive miscue in the closing minutes of the first half gave Moravian the only goal it needed.
Moravian broke through in the 42nd minute when Joey Roth capitalized on a misplayed clearance, tapping a loose ball across the goal line to put the Greyhounds ahead.
Kean looked to respond before halftime but entered the break trailing by one.
The Cougars came out with more pressure after the break, outshooting Moravian, 10-4, in the second half. Kean also put five shots on target during the match, matching the Greyhounds’ total.
Salem Ellisy generated Kean’s best opportunities of the night.
In the 54th minute, Ellisy nearly pulled the Cougars level when his attempt rattled the crossbar and bounced straight down before Moravian was able to clear the danger. The ball never crossed the goal line, keeping the Greyhounds in front.
Ellisy threatened again nine minutes later. The junior transfer sent an attempt toward the top of the goal in the 63rd minute, but Moravian goalkeeper Joey Varano made a leaping save to tip the ball away.
The Cougars continued to search for an opening as the second half progressed, but Moravian’s defense limited Kean’s chances in the final third and protected its one-goal advantage.
Juan Orozco made four saves for Kean, while Varano finished with five saves to earn a well-deserved clean sheet.
Kean was unable to find the equalizer despite its stronger offensive showing after halftime, as Moravian held on for the road victory.
The loss moves Kean to (1-2-3) on the season.
The Cougars will look to get back in the win column when they return to action next Wednesday against Western Connecticut State.
