Gotham FC returns home Friday night to host San Diego Wave FC in a matchup between two of the NWSL’s top four teams at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.
Gotham (11-3-4, 37 points) enters the match atop the NWSL standings after earning seven of a possible nine points during a three-match road trip. The Bats closed out the trip with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash on Saturday, as Sam Kerr scored the winning goal and Shelby Hogan made six saves to secure Gotham’s league-leading 11th clean sheet of the season. The result extended Gotham’s unbeaten streak to six matches.
The victory in Houston capped a difficult stretch of the schedule for Gotham, which faced three consecutive road matches while continuing to navigate a demanding portion of the season. Despite the challenges, the Bats found ways to collect points and maintain their position at the top of the table.
San Diego (10-6-2, 32 points) enters Friday’s matchup in fourth place after earning a 1-0 road victory over the Washington Spirit on Sunday. Lia Godfrey scored the game’s lone goal in the 60th minute as the Wave extended their unbeaten run away from home to five matches.
The Wave have remained one of the league’s most difficult teams to break down, combining a strong defensive structure with attacking players capable of changing the game in transition. Their recent run has kept them within striking distance of the top of the standings as the regular season continues.
Friday’s meeting marks the second matchup between the clubs this season. San Diego claimed a 2-0 victory at Snapdragon Stadium on July 4, handing Gotham its last league defeat. Since that result, the Bats have responded with a strong stretch of performances that has moved them into first place.
After spending the past three matches on the road, acting head coach Shaun Harris said the team is excited to return to Sports Illustrated Stadium and play in front of its home supporters.
“We’re excited to be back home, playing in our stadium,” Harris said. “It’s been a while, so everyone’s really excited. We’re looking forward to seeing the fans, seeing the environment and being back in our space.”
Harris expects another difficult challenge against the Wave but said Gotham is focused on improving from the previous meeting between the sides.
“It’s going to be a tough game,” Harris said. “San Diego poses a lot of threats. They beat us the last time at their place, so we really want to establish that dominance, control the game and ultimately put the ball in the back of the net to give ourselves a chance of winning.”
For Gotham, the return home also provides an opportunity to reconnect with its supporters after a long stretch away from New Jersey. Forward Jordynn Dudley said the team is excited for the chance to play in front of its home crowd again.
“We’re really excited for this game,” Dudley said. “It’s another big game after a long stretch of away games. We’ve already played them; they’ve already played us, so it’s going to be a good match no matter what.”
Dudley added that playing at Sports Illustrated Stadium brings a different energy, especially after spending the previous matches on the road.
“Home games are always the best,” Dudley said. “Our fans always show up, and I think especially here it’s always an advantage. After being away and having all the fans against us, it’s a really good opportunity to show our fans that we missed them and play for them.”
With both teams entering the match near the top of the NWSL table, Friday’s matchup provides another opportunity for Gotham to test itself against one of the league’s strongest opponents.
