HOUSTON — Sam Kerr bounced back from a first half missed penalty by scoring the winning goal early in the second half, while Shelby Hogan delivered another standout performance in goal as Gotham FC defeated the Houston Dash 1-0 Saturday night.
The victory completed a successful three-match road trip for Gotham, which won two matches and drew one while extending its unbeaten streak to six games. Hogan, making her third appearance of the season in place of Ann-Katrin Berger, recorded her third consecutive clean sheet, while Gotham’s defense posted its league-leading 11th shutout of the campaign.
Houston nearly struck first in the opening minutes.
After Savannah McCaskill was dispossessed, the ball fell to Kat Rader at the top of the penalty area. Rader’s low drive appeared destined for the corner, but Hogan reacted quickly to get a hand to the effort, pushing it onto the post to preserve the scoreless draw.
The Bats gradually found their rhythm and earned a golden opportunity in the 21st minute.
Jordynn Dudley used a clever move to beat her defender before Leah Klenke brought her down inside the penalty area, giving Gotham a penalty.
Kerr stepped to the spot looking to give the visitors the lead, but her attempt sailed wide of the left post, keeping the match scoreless.
The missed penalty didn’t linger for long. Kerr needed only 32 seconds after halftime to make amends.
Rose Lavelle slipped a perfectly weighted through ball to Guro Reiten, who drove into the penalty area before squaring the ball across goal. Kerr met the pass and calmly tucked a first-time finish into the bottom-right corner to put Gotham ahead.
The goal added another milestone to the Australian’s remarkable career. Kerr tied Esther González for the most regular-season goals in Gotham FC history with 30 and scored the 80th regular-season goal of her NWSL career. Reiten collected her fourth assist of the season.
Houston continued to push forward as the second half wore on, forcing Gotham to defend its narrow advantage in difficult playing conditions.
Reiten said Gotham expected a physical challenge after playing three matches in a week, especially in the Texas heat.
“At the end of a three-game week, we knew it was gonna be hard out there, with the heat as well,” Reiten said. “But we followed the game plan. We, especially in the first half, controlled the game pretty good, better than we’ve done recently. I wish that we created more and scored on those chances, but at the end of the day, we took the three points and that’s what matters.”
The Dash threw numbers forward in the closing stages, but Gotham’s back line remained organized in front of Hogan, who continued to answer every challenge.
Houston’s best chance to salvage a point came in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time when Sarah Puntigam unleashed a powerful shot from long range. Hogan sprawled to her left to tip the effort away, preserving Gotham’s lead with the save of the match.
Afterward, Hogan credited the confidence shown in her by the coaching staff and her teammates while filling in for Berger.
“I’m super grateful to have the confidence of the group and the confidence of the coaching staff, so when I step in, I just know I need to execute my role to the best of my ability,” Hogan said. “That’s what I tried to do tonight.”
Acting head coach Shaun Harris praised his team’s resilience after navigating a demanding week on the road.
“The ladies really grinded out a performance off the back of a really tough week — three games in a week,” Harris said. “To come here in the heat and the conditions and all the stuff surrounding the team, they really stepped up. … We got the job done. I can’t credit every single player enough. Everyone kind of left everything they had out there, so I’m really proud of the team.”
The victory capped a flawless three-match road swing for Gotham, which once again leaned on the league’s stingiest defense while Kerr supplied the decisive goal. Gotham returns home with six consecutive matches unbeaten, 11 clean sheets this season and momentum as it heads into the next stretch of the NWSL campaign.
