IMAGES: Demarest Boys Soccer Ends 49-Year County Title Drought With Halloween Night Win

By Christopher Shannon

For the Demarest boys’ soccer team, Halloween night was full of treats, and even some masked mayhem, as the Norsemen upset No. 20 Tenafly 4-2 in the 2026 Bergen County Boys Soccer Championship at Indian Hills High School on Oct. 31, 2026.

Four different players scored for Demarest, with Matthieu Brun, James Cho, Taehun Kim, and Nick Melnikau finding the back of the net for the Norsemen.  Cho and Yiannis Parikos added a bit of Halloween flair to the evening, celebrating the Norsemen’s third goal in festive style with Halloween masks, though both received yellow cards for the act.

Demarest entered the 2026 Bergen County Tournament as the twelfth seed, knocking off the 21st seed Becton, fifth-seed Glen Rock, fourth-seed Ramapo, and top seed and current state No. 10, Bergen County, to reach the title game.  The championship win also marks the first time since 1977 that the Demarest boys soccer team has won a county title.

Next up for both teams are the NJSIAA playoffs.  Demarest will start their state title hunt by hosting Parsippany Hills in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 Tournament on Wednesday, while Tenafly will host Wayne Hills in round one of the North 1, Group 3 Tournament on Wednesday, as well.
